Aerial of the Day #435 - 17 Nov 2003
« on: November 17, 2003, 09:49:44 AM »
Back across the pond for the 2nd to last British course and to
my favorite name for a British course.  Only partly because it
reminds me one of my favorite foods.

Definitely no buggies allowed here...

Chinese Food perchance, Scott?

Andy,

That clue was not Low on the cleverness scale.

Yes, FBD, stir-fry, particulcarly Mongolian BBQ/Grill.

I assume The Iron Chef named this course?

Or at least did a cover version of Aerosmith's big 70's hit that
wasn't a power ballad (I even have a '45 of it - name the
B-side song!)

The Wonderful Darwin quote re THAT bunker…

A: “You can’t persuade me that it is right to have a bunker bang on the line to the hole, exactly where a good drive should be.”
B: “If there is a bunker there, then that cannot be the line to the hole. Your drive was not a very good one, but a very bad one.”
A: “It was not a bad one. It was a perfect shot – hit in the very middle of the club.”
B: “You should use your own head as well as the club head.”

Now THAT'S Strategy!!!

FBD.

THAT (or THOSE) bunkers always seem to me to be left of centre and that there is a reasonable amount of room to the right of them.  OK, if you slice the least bit you are on the railway track.  The way the course was set up last time I was there there was very little room to the left of the bunkers and, as viewed from the tee, there didn't seem to be any viable alternate shot on that side.  Having said that, I sliced my tee shot (I'm a left-hander), found the first bunker (which is so far left it doesn't even show up on the aerial, being hidden by the trees) and ran up a cricket score, so who am I to comment?

Yan Can Cooking Implement Present Participle GC?

I'd certainly rather be doing this than riding.

In Surrey's Heathlands area outside London.

In 1904 C.H. Alison played a shot from the clubhouse roof onto the green to get him a half in the match between Cambridge University and the club.

Is the club located in a town/region/township/whatever with
this name?  Otherwise, I'd be curious to know how it got it's name.

Didn't Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn star in a movie about a
death row Chinese chef called Dead Man ______?

And didn't Patsy Cline sing about the Chinese chef who
preferred to cook after 12:00 at night?

Wait, I got it now!

It's Ole' Del Paso in Scaramento, and the Sarandon clue relates to Tim Robbins (her bidie in)/Marty Robbins (the singer) of the famous song.  No?

This is Woking, in Surrey, England, designed originally by Tom
Dunn, with significant changes (for the better) by Stuart Paton and John Low.

Information on the course can be found at the GCA write-up
(with pics, of course):

other clues include:

my favorite name for a British course.  Only partly because it
reminds me one of my favorite foods. = "wok"ing - good Chinese food.

Definitely no buggies allowed here... = "Woking"/walking

"Chinese Food perchance, Scott?"

Anyone who gets this one deserves a "Paton" the back.

That clue was not "Low" on the cleverness scale.

stir-fry, particulcarly Mongolian BBQ/Grill.

I assume The Iron Chef named this course? = Asian TV chef - "wok"

Or at least did a cover version of Aerosmith's big 70's hit that
wasn't a power ballad (I even have a '45 of it - name the
B-side song!) = "Walk This Way"  (b-side was "Uncle Salty")

"Yan Can Cooking Implement Present Participle GC?"
= "woking", as Yan Can is/was another Asian TV chef.

I'd certainly rather be doing this than riding. = "walking"

In Surrey's Heathlands area outside London.

"Wonton" Heath!  But, where's the 2nd 18..........??????  =
Walton Heath has 2 courses -and was a previous AOTD.
