I hit a bunch of 3 Woods today - Thanks Collin
« on: July 20, 2021, 07:28:49 PM »
Shot 1 over on the last 5 holes when I buried the driver for the 3 wood. Thanks Collin!!

It seems like Collin Morikawa just made GolfClubAtlas.com the throwback site of golf. He won two majors on:

  • A Muni in San Francisco
  • One of the two Greatest Courses in the UK according to Sean A - "It's TOC and Sandwich. All the other Open venues get the table scraps."

Sure he can hit it a long way, but he doesn't. He hit 3 wood when he needed to. I heard his putting stats are average, except when it counts. I love this kid, and he dates a golfer. Name that last Major winner dating a golfer? I don't know:

I think Bryson is great for golf as he changed the game, or at least identified its flaws. But Collin is THE Ambassador that golf has needed for a long time:

Congrats to Collin Morikawa.

I used to hit a lot of 3 woods off the tee then I tried a mini driver.  First I had the Callaway one then I got the Taylormade Original One and I havent used a 460cc driver since.  I ordered the new TM mini driver a few weeks ago and it should deliver tomorrow.  Excited to see how it works.  It seems because of Phil winning at Kiawah with a mini driver there has been a resurgence lately.  I grew up in the oversized metal woods era but I couldn't imagine playing for years and years with a persimmon then playing with the drivers of today.

I think Mediocre may even be a bit kind.  I'm surprised at how low he ranks on Tour this year, especially with how well he did on the last day at The Open.

While Hank Haney can be a bit hard to listen to at times, his podcast on Morikawa's performance at the Open is worth hearing. He takes a fairly deep dive into CM's game and his putting stats. He likes what he sees. ;)

Apparently he started using a saw grip and added 10 grams to his putter. Article on the saw grip effect https://www.pga.com/story/the-saw-grip-implemented-by-pga-champ-collin-morikawa-can-help-your-game

The idea of adding weight for slow greens is backwards, according to most who've examined it, but maybe his putter was just too light for him to use it to best effect.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

When you hit your 3 woods today, did you have a caddy that you talked to for ages before you actually hit the shot ? Just wondering.

ps. yes I know he's nice young man who played some great golf and thoroughly deserved to win but god that was torture to watch and listen to.

Kind of how in particular the likes of Peter Thomson, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods approached The Open and they won a fair few Opens between them.

Niall-I won’t argue that the announcers were tough
to listen to but I thoroughly enjoyed watching over the four days. I haven’t played RSG but it moved way up my list of courses I’d like to see.

My comment was entirely aimed at the speed of play and constant need to analyse and chat through everything with their caddies. Judging from some of the caddies responses they were also losing the will to live with it being a case of "what ever you say man".

Maybe better TV production could have saved the day by only showing us the players when they are about to hit the shot but that would have been a bit tricky when it comes to the last round of a major and the only players left are the leaders.

As for the commentators, I put the TV on mute for a number of them. And yes the course looked fabulous.

Niall -

You should think about giving Morikawa a break. With next to no links golf experience and playing in his first Open, he was playing the biggest round of his life on arguably the most "local knowledge-centric" course in the Open rota (blind shots, humps, hollows, mounds, swales, etc.). I am pretty sure neither he nor his caddy had seen the course before July 12.

I was more than happy to indulge him taking 30-45 seconds to prepare himself on some shots if that led to him shooting 66 in the final round. ;)

This is a great observation - the juxtaposition of those two people is incredible.

I wonder if part of the reason for asking for the detailed advice is not because the golfer actually feels he needs it, but almost because it's an opportunity to play-act a bit as a pro golfer. Is it a sort of role-playing exercise? That's how I felt about it when I was a caddie - I was indulging players in an opportunity to fantasize a bit about being a really great player more than actually helping them, sometimes.

Just always cracks me up.
Often I'll see it with a new caddie on his first loop in his first year.

I find a three wood more difficult to control than a driver.  I only use it when I need a club that goes three wood distance. I avoid that monster.  Same with my hybrid. Pawns of Satan, they are.

I have developed a knock down driver rather than hitting a 3 wood off the tee -- that tiny little head inspires no confidence in me even if it goes as far as my driver on a well struck shot.

Jeff a couple of years ago I was caddying for a guy at RSG, on 14 he hit it 20 yards over the OB fence, but as you know it’s blind from the tee. I said it’s OB but he disagreed with me saying it was safe, I was forced to point out it was his first round there and probably my 250th. Thankfully he reloaded.

Interesting. No slight intended but it kinda suggests something about how the equipment and the game has evolved over the last 20-25 yrs.
