How many rounds a year do some UK courses get?
« on: July 21, 2021, 03:16:22 PM »
I’m thinking of some of the more elite courses like Sunningdale and Royal St. George’s. I’m guessing they get over 30,000 rounds.

Someone will know this better than me but I think different elite courses have different policies:

I seem to recall TOC is the most with close to 60,000 rounds, fourballs dawn to dusk every day of the year bar Sundays.

But some of the elite courses limit visitor play to an extent so can be a little empty at times. Nothing like some of the more exclusive American courses I expect. You are probably right that 30,000 is about a norm.

In Ireland, Ballybunion and Lahinch are packed out, Portmarnock restricts visitors a bit more and a place like Carne was only seeing about 11,000 rounds even when visitors were at peak. Contrasting that, Strandhill was getting closer to 40,000 because of the large, vibrant membership.

I know of some elite private clubs that are 20k+, but I know some clubs that are lucky to 6k per year.

I think Tom Doak mention the NLE Links Club would get about 5k

Then you take courses like Torrey Pines, or East Potomac park and we are looking at 100k+.

I’d would say that 25-30k is pretty close to the average.

#'s of rounds is a very deceiving metric
First of all, there is a LOT of winter golf played in the UK.
The UK pros I speak to tell me those are the most stressful days of the year, with high demand and short daylight.
i know I've had more difficulty getting tee times in November than I have in prime summer season overseas.
Meanwhile in the US, there is zero golf played at many courses some years from Dec-February.

Interestingly, at many UK clubs that actually have winter golf despite the short days, there are many super long days in the late spring summer where they can really pile up the rounds

We have two 18 hole courses and did 402 rounds last Saturday, that is both courses pretty jam packed, but in the UK it has been like this for a year now at the weekend and even midweek it is a good 60% of that. Winter time you can only put half those numbers on and 130 is a full day for 18 holes.

So....I reckon even being jam packed its hard to do much more than 45,000 rounds in the UK on an 18 hole golf course.

TOC at 60-70,000 is filling pretty much every space, which of course they do.

I always used to think 40,000 was the norm but I think I was out by 10,000.

Royal St George's is a 2-ball only course I think about 362 days a year. They have a lot of foursomes though - not sure if you would count four people playing two balls as two rounds or four rounds. I don't know about the last year or two, but I've never seen it busy there.
