My favorite transition hole: Holinwell?
« on: September 30, 2021, 10:22:03 PM »
No it is not the 13th at Holinwell! These are mostly dodgy devices there  to complete a routing. Usually a drop shot par three is employed but I must say I almost always equate drop shot holes to throwing lawn darts and usually feel cheated playing them. And even the term is somewhat loose as sometimes a transition involves combinations of holes but I think, like smut, you know one when you see it.

I encountered three at Cavendish recently; a definite drag on an otherwise sporty Mckenzie layout another at hole 6 at Reddish Vale( not to mention the feckless 18th uphill finish) and the 13th At Sunny Old which is not a hole crying for a Kodak moment as the weakest hole by far on that venerable track.
I must say though that Hollinwell , in keeping with it's superlative golfing presentation all around,, has my favorite transition hole to date the par 4 11th. This hole is so inviting because the fairway follows an uphill hollow framed by stunning ridges similar to the ninth at Maidstone or the 12th? at Shinnecock to a plateau greensite under the 12th teeing ground. Perhaps someone with better skills will indulge me and post a picture of it. Just a stunning and very fun golf hole.
So will anyone else offer up their example of an inspired and successfully executed up or down transition hole
"Golf is happiness. It's intoxication w/o the hangover; stimulation w/o the pills. It's price is high yet its rewards are richer. Some say its a boys pastime but it builds men. It cleanses the mind/rejuvenates the body. It is these things and many more for those of us who truly love it." M.Norman

10-16 is the making of Notts. A series of very well conceived holes which deals with the hill...remarkable.

11 is fantastic at Hollinwell.  It has an inland feel of NSW #7, with the climb and the dune setting.

The ground on these holes at Notts is best described as dramatic.
Bob; its impossible to explain some of the clutter that gets recalled from the attic between my ears. .  (SL Solow)

I find it very hard to think of 11 at Notts as a transition hole.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Different definitions of transition hole.

If well executed, what was a transition hole for the architect is anything but for the golfer.
