What’s up with #1 at RSG
« on: July 17, 2021, 10:37:09 AM »
Nearly three-quarters of the field have missed the fairway… the vast majority on the right side.

What’s making these guys hit the ball in the cabbage? Is it the sight line, the “line of charm?” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a relatively simple hole like #1 display such a magnet like this.

The answer could be as simple as nerves.  Didn’t Tiger lose his tee shot there?  I’d be curious to see the percentages of it vs the other driving holes.

The wind off the left doesn’t help either.  I just wonder how many lost balls there would be if they didn’t have spotters and fans there.

A lot of lost balls I would guess, Tommy. They haven’t mowed the rough in TWO YEARS!

That’s a real difference from when you and I play there.

Wind direction. It's been from approx the NE so far this week whereas the prevailing is more SW.

Yet the 36 hole record fell and the 54 hole record was missed by one, while the average guy would be on a miserable ball hunt.
All because the average guy's been hoodwinked into believing the boogieman is out to steal his distance, and has also been told that golf is more exciting to watch when some device tells them a drive(they never saw land) went 330 rather than 280.

Although it has been tough all week at Royal St George's, today's wind punished any ball that had (right handed) slice spin.  Plus there was an opening from the right side that missed the greenside front bjunkers.

I think Justin Leonard said something today about tee shot on 1 as unsettling after the wind direction on the range.

Tons of tee shot wind up right regardless of wind. Large sections of the fairway kick right toward lower ground.

Being just a touch naughty here but maybe we need the services of someone who is statistically and mathematically minded to undertake a comprehensive analysis of how the tee shot plays depending on wind direction, level of skill of the player, what club was used, whether the player is right or left handed, whether the player played their normal shot shape or tried to work the shot, tee position, firmness of the turf, temperature, time of year, time of day etc etc and compare it to the same data gathered for every day of the previous x number years including the last y number of occasions The Open has been held at RStG. Maybe there’s even someone playing at RStG this week who wishes they had access to such data. (sic).:):):)

Makes me wonder how the competitors would approach the tee shot, the whole course even, if there were no spotters, marshalls, spectators, walking media folks, caddies etc etc to help find their ball and if they only had one ball and if they lost that one ball, RoG 3 minute limit, they’d have finish there and then and walk in.

Both of these things are factors I’m sure. But it’s definitely line of charm having an effect also.

The 9th at Portmarnock is a similarly subtle dog-leg right. I play it twice a week and can’t stop myself landing in the right rough over 50% of the time. You think I’d learn!

I think there is something to this, but isn't it line of instinct...the straight line to the hole? Regardless, I do think seeing the flag or green on a hole which turns can be a strong pull to hit more directly at the target. Plus, it's generally a better angle from the right. I think it's a clever hole.
