Ohio July-oh 2021: NCR North
« on: July 13, 2021, 07:58:02 AM »
As suggested in the other thread, the weather and the tournament conspired against me. The difference 'twixt the two courses was apparent but, in my mind, the more important matter was divided among securing equipment and respecting competition. With that said, here are some looks at the North course at NCR. If pressed for a contrast, I would say that both courses play wide, but the North looks wide.

I like the contrast between the North and South courses.  The South, you play through a lot of valleys, North is more open and parkland. The greens on South course are really, really good.

That's a tidy and accurate assessment, Paul. I suspect that an above-average ball striker (or one who plays the most appropriate tee decks for ability) would have a time around the South. For the more erratic golfer, the North seems to be the welcome alternative.

Ron - I'm appreciating the threads you started on the courses at NCR. I played NCR South again about a month ago and was reminded how good the course is overall. The South can really be a stout test. I think it's overlooked among private courses in Ohio because it's not the type of architecture that is in favor currently like its neighbor Moraine. (That comment should not be taken in any way to be a slight on Moraine. The club has done an exceptional job of revitalizing the course and it certainly deserves the accolades it has received.) Wilson's work on NCR South (as well as the North for a more playable option) is really good.

My grandfather was a 25+ year employee at NCR in Dayton and retired from the company in the early 1990s. While he was an employee, NCR Country Club was still 'perk' for NCR employees - costs to play the courses were minimal for employees and retirees. The club hadn't yet converted to the membership model that currently exists at the club with members being charged monthly dues similar to other country clubs as well as the club being opened to non-NCR affiliated outside members. My grandfather loved the North course - primarily because it was more playable for his skill level (someone who shot in the mid-80s). I played the North course quite a bit while I was in high school in the late 90s. When I visited the club last month, the North course seemed pretty similar to how I remembered it from 20+ years ago, but the greens and bunkering seemed to have been spruced up a bit in line with a bit of a restoration.

Thank you, Mark.

I need to comment OT on the staff. They could not have been more gracious to me. They engaged in proper (not simply polite) conversation and were truly interested in what I was doing in western Ohio. They invited me back, any time that I find myself out that way. I had the same treatment at Columbus and Springfield, and was thrilled to be so well-received in the great state of Ohio.

I normally attach a ladder to my golf cart (what I call faux drone) but did not wish to risk slipping off and breaking something, on such a drizzly day. As a result, I could only get elevation when God allowed it.
