Eleanor's Teeth
« on: July 03, 2021, 08:43:17 PM »
Thanks to Evan Schiller's Instagram feed for golf photography, I've become acquainted with Eleanor's Teeth. Is there a better-named bunker complex (shy of Principal's Nose, and there are more teeth than nostrils, so Eleanor wins) in the world of golf? I get that the Devil's A$$hole is also pretty good, but it borders on the vulgar and the scatalogical, which ET and PN resist.

I won't die on this hill, but I'll summit it with great intent. Have at this challenge.

I wasn't aware of it either.  Was this reintroduced as part of the Keith Foster restoration?

Originally, the bunker shape spelled out JAIL. That was softened over the years. I've seen a photo but have no clue where it might be.

It's the 4th hole at Apawamis... if that was a question...

If I ever get to name a bunker complex it'll be called Zuzu's Petals. Ideally the golf course would be located in a town like Bedford Falls, New York -- south of Elmira.

"It gets its name from the ''teeth'' of sod that drop down from the top lip. Originally the ''teeth'' spelled out ''jail,'' but parts of the letters were too hard to maintain. During the administration of President Franklin Roosevelt, the Flossmoor members gave the bunker its name after the first lady."

Scratch my reference...thought this was the Apawamis one. Now we have dueling bicuspids.

The ones at Flossmoor clearly spelled out JAIL at some point. The ones at Apawamis are upper and lower ridges, and less likely to spell much of anything, without a tongue.

I've been able to find two bunker complexes named Eleanors Teeth. One is Apawamis in Rye, NY. The other is at the 16th hole at Flossmoor near Chicago. I believe "jail" was at Flossmoor per https://thefriedegg.com/flossmoor-country-club/

Interesting that Tweedie did both Flossmoor and Hinsdale. He had nothing to do with Apawamis.

It's an insulting name that needs to be refreshed. It's not funny or accurate.

Jaka,

We never know if it is good-John, or bad-John posting. Regardless, either John is right on this one. My Dad effectively served under Eleanor Roosevelt as alt-Commander in Chief.

I fail to find anything disparaging in calling a twin set of bunkers Eleanor's Teeth. The bunkers are immaculate, well-aligned, certainly no cavities, and away we go. Anyone would be proud to have choppers like these. I find the ones from Chicago land to be much less flattering.

Ron,

I'll take your word that you don't believe that "Eleanor's Teeth" is a derogatory term. I would suggest you read the following article I have linked. Your actions have inspired me to contact the mentioned clubs to ask them to remove the designation.

No matter the name, these bunkers are way overly manicured and represent everything that is wrong with golf in America.

I see that Eleanor Roosevelt had prominent teeth, known then as buckteeth. They were adjusted after an automobile accident.

I would suggest, then, that some mythic figure (like Pluto, Neptune, or Poseidon) replace Eleanor and the bunkers be called Juno's Teeth, or whichever. Simply calling them The Teeth would detract from the historic notion.

Good to see that you are spreading the word about microagressions, jk. The world needs more of your ilk.

Doesn't Highland Links have a dragon and fireball bunker set? And perhaps others? Didn't you do a photo tour of the course?

Garland,

I don't recall the naming of bunkers at Highland Links. I did do a photo tour there, but none of their bunkers stick in my mind as worthwhile. At Highland Links, the bunkers and the putting surfaces took a back seat to the land. I don't remember any of the greens having noteworthy, internal contours, except perhaps for the ninth.
