For GOLF DIGEST to compare this tokenism to Annika playing a PGA Tour event at Colonial is really beyond the pale.

I can’t fathom why anyone that’s not a member there would care.

Obviously no successful women outside of golfers desire to be members....or meet the given criteria - socially compatible?

Is it no wonder golf has an image problem?

Agreed.  This is the “token female member” to appease the masses.  Not only that, it gets PV off the hook in a recent discrimination lawsuit.

Because its more phony "technical compliance/legal fiction" hypocrisy that's behind notions of power and privilege... world's going the other way.

Sir.
Perhaps you can expand on why someone that isn’t a golfer would want to be a member?
Further, what image problem are you referring to?
Which non golfing females should they have admitted to their private club that would appease the masses?

Let's be honest ... there are plenty of people who join golf courses with no intention of ever playing. I just played a course that is comparable in prestige to PV, and my host said he gets out on the course maybe once a year. There are many reasons someone might want a membership at a place like that, and I think networking is probably just as important a factor as the golf.

What is this image problem? What changes would “solve” that problem without alienating a different group? Should we advocate what is wrong to appease others?

I can guarantee you that person, if a man, is not gaining an invitation to join Pine Valley.

The question was why someone that isn't a golfer would want to be a member. The answer is, it happens all the time, usually for networking purposes, and sometimes simply as a social circles trophy. Whether or not PV would go for it is irrelevant to the question asked.

Not being familiar w Pine Valley and it’s make up. I’d guess it’s a golf club. Perhaps there’s a dinner club to it as well? Anyone got any idea what a social membership there goes for?

When I referred to golfer I should have stated accomplished golfer as noted in the GD article.  All three women were invited solely because of their golfing abilities.  I did not mean to preclude someone who merely plays golf and is hence a golfer.

As far as the image problem golf continues to be viewed as an elitist sport with an exclusive not inclusive culture. There are certainly women who are highly successful in other fields who would be thrilled to join PV.  Breaking down barriers has nothing to do with appeasing others.  It should be done because it is the right thing to do whether we are talking race, religion, gender or whatever.

If the new members have been seeking membership, good for them.If their "golf reputation" trumped others, bad on P.V.

The evolving zeitgeist is for a "just" society in which merit and agency have little place.  Then we whine about who slips through the gates.

Geez!  I wouldn't give a damn why they would want me as a member.  A token to check off a box.  Another pretty face.  A regular contributor to the money game.  Fine.  Just make me one!

I know just one PV member relatively well.  He doesn't make it to PV every year, and seldom does more than twice.  He was offered a membership many years ago because he was an outstanding player who competed there several times with success and is a genial gentlemen who fits the membership well.

As he tells it, after numerous visits, a member approached him about his interest in joining the club.  He answered in the affirmative and was invited a couple of times more to visit with his wife.  Some time later the member calls to confirm his interest and upon receiving the correct answer, tells him to expect a call from the club.  Some five minutes later he gets a call from someone of authority who says "I understand that you would like to be a member of PV".  My acquaintance says something to the effect that it would be a privilege.  The caller simply responds "Well, you are".  A packet arrives in the mail a few days later and that was pretty much it.

Much simpler days back then.

A member friend of mine joined in the early 60’s. He said they were looking for members. As for the new women members, you have to start somewhere.

I take it as another lesson, no matter how much you capitulate to the mob it will never be enough. If it was 3, it should have been 4, so forth and so on.

PV gets it, albeit late.  The first female members are golfers, not celebrities, not moguls, not pols, just golfers.  PV is a golf club. If it was something other than that 25 years ago, that’s what it wants to be now.  Credit is due, no buts.

I think many are missing the point.  Yes, better late than never….but, why did it have to be arguably some of the biggest names in golf?  Idk this as fact, but I’m sure there are plenty of no-name Janes that were more than happy to join that would fit in at the club. It felt like a “hey look at us, we accept women now” moment.  Plus add the discrimination lawsuit in there and the effort feels cheap, patronizing, and insincere.  Honestly, idc but this is my thought.

If you knew the names Sarah Ingram and Meghan Stasi before yesterday, I'd be impressed.

And if more than 10 random golfers knew those names out of 50, I'd be surprised.

I wonder if any of PV's new female members live in the state of NJ. ::)
Conde Rice was a member of Cypress Point, Augusta National and Shoal Creek so they could claim two minority members in one. :P
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I never heard of the ams and I don't much care if they are PV members. The club decides who can join. So long as laws aren't being transgressed it's none of my business.

That said, golf has an image problem both with elitism and as a poor steward of environment, and rightly so. The only way to change that image is to alter behaviour and loudly announce the changes in the media.

What an astonishingly strange thing to commit to the internet under your real name in 2021.
