Golden Horseshoe Gold is my gut as well, but if it’s in decent shape Royal New Kent does offer a glimpse into the fleeting, unique genius of Mike Strantz, and it’s only about 30 minutes out of Williamsburg.

I'll also throw my hat in with the Gold Course recommendation. I think it was one of RTJs best work on a small compact piece of land.

Another vote for Gold. River at Kingsmill is a fine layout, but Gold is more interesting and fun.

If you haven't seen it, go to Royal New Kent.  It's about 30 minutes outside of town.

In town, Golden Horseshoe Gold is good (great set of par threes).  I like Kingsmill River, too.

If you have access, you're only an hour from Kinloch to the west or Cavalier to the east.

I played the green yesterday. I have to play it once a year in a charity scramble. It might be the biggest quality difference between two courses on one site anywhere.  The gold is fantastic and the green is just horrible.


To answer the question, it would be either the Gold course or Royal New Kent.

One of the aspects of classic resorts that I like best is the dining room. The Williamsburg Inn is near the top of the list. We had our honeymoon and 25th Anniversary at the Broadmoor where the Penrose Room was classic old school. I have not checked recently, but I doubt it still is the same. Not sure that there are many left.

I would rank Kinloch at the bottom of the 4 unless you are purely talking ascetics.
The Gold is a great track, Royal New Kent is a huge course but will definitely illicit a response IE love it or hate it, heard great things about Cavalier being an old school layout, Kinloch to me is just another modern ho hummer of a course.
I have always enjoyed Kiskiak there as well, a little quirky but fun.
You will be hard pressed to play a better conditioned course than Kinloch to be fair.
