Perhaps a newly rediscovered Donald Ross golf course
« on: June 11, 2021, 09:13:59 PM »
Does anyone know more about this Donald Ross designed golf course? It was called the College Arms Golf Club in Deland, Florida. I believe it was originally 9 holes that was expanded to 18 holes by Ross but I do not know the year. The Donald Ross Society does not have it on their list of golf courses. The newspaper clipping is from the 27 Dec 1936 Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.

Twenty years earlier it was reported as designed by local professional D. E. Miner.

Thanks Sven, Not the first time I have seen Dermont E. Miner's work confused in a newspaper article for Ross. One that comes to mind is the Raleigh CC in Raleigh, NC nka Carolina CC. Below are clippings showing Miner and Ross' name attached to Raleigh CC. This course is not to be confused with Ross' Raleigh CC of 1947.

Also below is an advertisement, an obit and grave photo for Miner. Quite a title for Miner on his gravestone "Dean of American Golf".

"He was Dean of American Golf"

If anybody gets it right they will be punished  :D

To quote Dean Wormer with the most timeless advice a commencement speaker could offer to a graduating class:

“Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”

Karl, thanks so much for posting the articles regarding Carolina Country Club.  We have been enjoying a spirited debate as to who designed what. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of Miner and had never seen Ross tied to our course.

I can send you all the clippings I have on the Raleigh CC nka Carolina CC in a separate post when I get a chance. Your first club president W. H. Williamson use to winter in Deland, FL, I seem to recall in a bio for him. So I can see the connection to contract Dermont E. Miner to lay out your course. Their are other Miner layouts in Florida and work of his in New York. I am very uncertain of a Ross connection because I believe the newspaper article is incorrect. It is true though that a RCC member did visit President Taft and invite him to the opening. I don't think Taft attended though. I'll see what I can assemble in another post sometime soon.

I have a friend who is a member of Carolina CC (Raleigh) who claims no particular lineage for the course so I was a bit surprised when I saw that the website states that it is a Tillinghast design.

Carolina CC in Raleigh, NC was reviewed by Tillinghast on 23 Nov 1936 and offered his thoughts on some redesign work the club was undertaking. Tillinghast did not design the golf course.
