Pete Dye lineage and how did he use associates?
« on: May 22, 2021, 02:36:03 PM »
I was trying to Google who was the design associate at the Ocean course at Kiawah but thought that Pete spent so much time there he probably didn't use a design associate? Does anyone know if he had a lead associate at such courses like TPC Sawgrass, Whistling Straights or Casa de Campo?

What I did find is his lineage of architects that worked under him and it's impressive.  I question adding Jack Nicklaus but they did work together at The Golf Club and Harbor Town.

Also, why did they add Ben Crenshaw?

First of all, none of us were Pete’s associates - we were always on the developer’s payroll.

Second, Pete’s operation was different than mine or Bill Coore’s.  The guy in charge was either a project manager (David Postlethwait at the TPC Sawgrass, Lee Schmidt at PGA West) or the superintendent (Bobby Weed at Long Cove).  Jason McCoy was the guy at Kiawah and later at Medalist, from which Pete encouraged him to go to work for Greg Norman.

Wasn't his most important associate Alice, his wife? :)

I believe Chris was a shaper when working for Dye early in his career. Mike Oconor headed up Whistling Strait and the third course at La Romana in the Dominican.

I hadn’t looked at Joel’s list of names closely enough before, but it’s misleading, in that Bruce Hepner and Tom Mead and Gil Hanse and Mike DeVries worked for me, but never on any Dye projects.

If you’re going to include them, you’d have to include ten others to be consistent, not to mention all of Bill Coore’s team, and all the guys who worked for Perry’s company (dozens). And then you’d need to have umpteen arguments about where to draw the line on which of them were “architects”.

Lineage discussion reminds me of the ASGCA meeting where we honored Trent Jones (Sr). Everyone who ever worked for the Jones’s was asked to stand — about 40 stood. Then a cranky voice yelled out: “I applied!” That voice...Pete Dye.

I saw the article with the names on another web site.

https://vault.si.com/vault/2002/06/17/the-first-families-of-golf-every-course-architect-is-a-branch-on-one-of-35-design-family-trees-si-picked-the-best-trees-and-the-top-10-tracks-from-each

I assumed Gil and Bruce Hepner are just part of the lineage starting for Pete and then you and so on.

I was just trying to understand how Pete used his people on major jobs since he spent so much time on site and pretty much ran the operation.
