For the first time in the club’s existence a bylaw change at the annual meeting has opened the door to women members and unrestricted women’s play.

This is really cool.

PV is one of the places I have heard other clubs’ members cite when defending their own exclusionary policies.

I have had some of the best times in my golfing life at PVGC and none of them would have been diminished by sharing them with female members and guests.

I know this issue is vexed and fiercely contested in the USA. I applaud the membership of PVGC getting this done.

This is an aside: I know it is 10 years since Augusta first invited women to join. Does anyone know how many lady members they currently have (approximately)?

An article on this on GD said that there were less than a dozen clubs in the US that do not allow women.  What clubs are still on that list?  Chicago?
Here in Canada we have The National which is Men only, and Ladies Golf Club of Toronto, which is Ladies only, although I don't think the Ladies club has that many restrictions on men playing.

Garden City Men's Club and I feel like Old Elm might be men only.

The Sharon Golf Club in Wadsworth, Ohio is men only.

Will PV create a new set of tees? There is no way my wife could play from the current set of tees.

Tom-I think you need to give the club a little time to sort things out as the announcement was just made yesterday.

Chicago Golf Club has never been men-only [to play], as far as I know.  However there are/were several such clubs in Chicago:  Old Elm, Bob O'Link, Butler National, and Black Sheep.

Others that I know of:  Garden City Golf Club NY, Blind Brook NY, Burning Tree MD, The Sharon Club OH, Pepper Pike Club OH.  The Golf Club [OH] used to be, but I think they changed the policy.  It's possible that a couple of others have, too.

I'm pretty sure Burning Tree in DC suburbs is men-only.  I think I remember reading that membership was a perk offered to all Supreme Court Justices until Sandra Day O'Connor ascended to the court.  She was not offered a membership.  I also remember reading that female spouses of members are allowed on property only for about an hour on a certain day just before Christmas so they can shop for their husbands.

Brain Cramp - I was thinking Butler National, not Chicago.

I remember reading about five years ago that Preston Trail in Dallas was all-male and the "dress code" stipulated that you must have at least a towel around your waist in the dining room.  Given the old boys' network in Texas I doubt things have changed (much).

Connecticut Golf Club was founded as all-male and judging from the dress code on their website it doesn't look as if that has changed.

Huh?
From the outside, PV doesn't strike me as a place that would make any decision so rashly, especially when it would possibly "neccesitate" changes to the course. Do you really believe this Tim?

Plantation in the So Cal desert doesn't allow women on property as I understand it. Cal Club has no female members but women can play at certain times (or maybe any time?) as guests.

Peter-I think it’s a foregone conclusion that they will have a new set of tees for the women. From a PR standpoint I don’t think it was necessary for them to get into that during the announcement. The only changes to the golf course I would bet on are the installation of the subject forward tees.

Women have been allowed to play Pine Valley on Sundays. Regardless its more money for Tom and Logan Fazio to design forward tees.

Unlike Augusta, Pine Valley likes good players who have made contributions to golf.  Wouldn't surprise me if they let in some former LPGA players to start.

As I recall one of my hosts may have said my wife could drop me off in the parking lot but she could not get out of the car. Either that, or she couldn’t even drive into the lot. Think it was the latter.

John,  Butkus is not a member at Bob O Linc.  You have the wrong Bears legend
