Either there or Hillside. You are so close if you are playing Birkdale you might as well. Do you have Formby on your Schedule? It is a great place too.

Not if it means rushing out of Hoylake, Birkdale, Lytham or Formby. All four of those have lots to take in besides their wonderful golf courses.

Funny story about S&A Mayday. Back in college I was doing a summer study in Florence and my trip was coming to a close. I decided to meet my friend and his father for the weekend up in Southport, and we went to the Open at Lytham that Duval went on to win.

On Monday morning they were playing S&A, and it was my intention to join them, though I didn't have any clubs. We showed up to an empty club that Monday morning and a pro shop that had no pro nor anything in it! Apparently the pro had quit over the weekend and cleared out his shop. The pre-arranged caddy never showed either.  So I decided to loop it for my friend and his dad while they played SA.

For what it's worth I thought the place was super cool, and definitely worth playing!

With all those scheduled I wouldn't break my back scheduling S&A unless you only play the championship course at Formby and skip the Ladies course.

I would skip S&A and drive over to Alwoodley. If looking for a quirky course in the area try Hesketh.

West Lancs hasn’t been mentioned and often seems to be over-looked on that coast.  It’s the best part of 25 years since I played there but I thought it was really good.

S&A is a good course with many fine holes. There are a few holes at the far end that are quite ordinary. I haven't played Hillside, but from what I've read about it on on here (Sean and a few others), it's a bit disappointing. Should you consider replacing Hillside with S&A? Hopefully others can advise.

Surprised you say that Tommy. I thought the ladies course at Formby was terrific with bags of character. It might not be as big as the others but if you're playing a lot of big boy courses on the trip then that's no bad thing IMHO.

I would not drop Formby Ladies for S/A. Not worth the effort and you would be missing something worth seeing.

+1 but..
I must say that S&A looks quite good on the club website(guilty pleasure-I like the odd trees scattered around the links)

It depends upon your definition of bending over backwards.
West Lanc is quite good as noted earlier, and I have a bit of fondness for St, Annes Old Links

Somehow I've missed S&A in three trips to the area.

Beyond the three Open courses we are scheduled for Hillside, West Lancs, both at Formby, Wallasey with Buda in the middle.
S/A doesn’t take guests on the day we play Hillside and has a competition the only other two other days we can fit it in.

I'd say you're covered.
Looks like a great trip!
Wallasay is great fun.
I haven't played Hillside either(or Birkdale, but I did attend an Open there)

I think the Ladies is great fun. Just offering a suggestion. A full day at Formby is pretty great.

We gave S&A a miss on our Lancashire trip also. The par 3 5th & 14 at Formby Ladies are worth the price of admission alone! St. Anne’s Old played the most firm and fast; drives could run to perdition and iron shots needed to be landed well short of the pin. Another option in the area is Delamere Forest, a fabulous Fowler course; every hole is a keeper there. Best sausage rolls in all of England!

Mike, I wouldn't miss Formby Ladies to play S&A -- it's great fun especially after a morning on the "main" course. Nor would I miss Hillside since the massive dunes on back 9 will be unlike what you'll experience on the other courses in that area. Stick with your plan.
