10 Course Bucket List
« on: March 25, 2021, 03:38:07 PM »
I'm a newbie to the site and I'm sure this topic has been bandied about before, but I'm interested in a listing of the top 10 courses you'd like to play in your (remaining) lifetime.  Perhaps you might add the top 5 you've been fortunate enough to knock off your list, just to add some context.  Mine:

Hope to Play
Fishers
TOC
Cruden Bay
Waverly
Prairie Dunes
Sandhills
Davenport
San Francisco
Hirono
Morfontaine

Done
Pebble
Cypress
Pine Valley
Teeth of the Dog
Merion East

Sadly no.  Best Great Plains course I've played was Riverdale Dunes.  Very enjoyable but merely a shadow of Ballyneal.

I have pretty much emptied the bucket, so my current list of 10 courses to play are the ones I'd like to see before I finish the last volume of The Confidential Guide:

Royal Agadir, Morocco
Copenhagen GC, Denmark
* Iona, Scotland
Noria, Morocco
Penati, Slovakia
Sand Valley, Poland
Sperone, Corsica
Thracian Cliffs, Bulgaria
Troia, Portugal
West Cliffs, Portugal

* not for the book but probably #1 on the list

Honestly, though, I think nearly all of the ten best remaining courses I will play before I die are courses that will open in the next 5-6 years, hopefully including a few of my own.

Current Top 10:
Chicago Golf Club
Crystal Downs
Shoreacres
Old Town Club
Yeamans Hall
Camargo
St. Louis CC
Inverness
Moraine
Pacific Dunes

My great grandad founded Prairie Dunes, so I've had the chance to play there a number of times.
Also high on my 'played' list would be Ballyneal, Southern Hills, Scioto, Omaha CC

I managed to get to West Cliffs and Troia just before travel ground to a halt this time last year. I was wondering as I flew back how you would rate them in the next Confidential Guide.

Alas I may have to wait a while to find out I guess. Do you have a target date for publication given the challenges?

Troia could be really good...

To PCCraig: my home course is in transition from overpriced desert golf in Scottsdale to nine-hole coastal layouts in Maine.  I can't be more excited!  What's yours?

Since 2005, I have played about 175 different courses in the U.S. and since 2007, I have played about 175 different courses overseas.  I started out doing road trips from a base in San Diego where I have a winter condo and the experience of being holed up in motels while playing some quality public courses in California motivated me to expand to the Southwest in Arizona.  I also live part time in the Pacific Northwest and grew up playing golf so I have played most of the older private courses in Washington State and the modern private courses.  I play Gold Mountain Olympic and Port Ludlow when I am at home in the Northwest.  In the past few months I mostly have played at Torrey Pines South where I can get local rates and Barona Creek on the afternoon rate.

I opted for international travel because in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, and England, it is possible to access many of the courses that have historical and architectural significance.  I'd happily play the private courses in the U.S. that make up the bulk of the top 100, but don't have the connections.  I've been to Australia on 16 different trips and Ireland on 13 different trips.  I've been to Scotland on three trips and did one trip in England to the Southwest and played St. Enodoc on a five day ticket and four other courses. I befriended a Japanese man in Hong Kong and that led to meeting up with one of his friends in Japan and playing Hirono.  On another trip, the Hirono member arranged play at Tokyo Golf Club and Kasumigaseki - East.  I did a six week trip to Spain and Portugal and played 10 different courses in each country.  I've also played in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Norway, and Sweden.

I'm heading to Pinehurst again next week and have a trip to Sand Valley and Lawsonia in late May.  I'm signed up for the Midwest Mashie in September.

Five courses I would like to play in the U.S. are:

1.  Pine Valley
2.  Cypress Point
3.  Sand Hills
4.  Ballyneal
5.  Rock Creek Cattle Company

Overseas, I have an interest in spending some time in England and playing the following:

1.  Silloth on Solway
2.  Formby
3.  Ganton
4.  Woodhall Spa
5.  Alwoodley

Mostly, I am looking forward to regular trips back to Australia to play courses out on the Mornington Peninsula at The National Golf Club and maybe to Barnbougle Dunes and The Lost Farm again, along with the new Seven Mile Beach course near Hobart when it opens.

I've mostly focused my efforts where accessibility guided travel decisions for golf.

Psst Hey Tom,

Let's keep this between me and you because I don't want a stampede looking for access, but I can get you on at Iona.  You don't even have to tip the ferry captain.

I’m thinking more parts of the world than specific golf courses. NZ/Tassie/Victoria. Arg/Chi/Uru. Fra/Hol/Ice/Nor/Den. Fingers crossed re travel and Covid.
As to specifics Brancaster/RWN, Prestwick, North Berwick and St Patrick’s. A reversible course, ie The Loop, would be intriguing too.

Hoping to see these courses as the travel lockdown eases in Scotland April 26th:

Montrose
Murcar
Cullen
Covesea
Nairn (first visit after the work)

I've not listed a couple of repeat visits on that Aberdeen/Inverness swing but those are the ones I'm most intrigued by.

Top 10 on my hit list:

St Patrick's (hopefully June!)
Lofoten (hopefully June)
Les Bordes New and Piglet (hopefully July)
Rock Creek Cattle Co
Myopia Hunt
CapRock
Silloth
Royal West Norfolk
St Enodoc
Cruit Island

This thread needs to stop.  I'm already looking at flights.

2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

TOC is the only course that I have not played—and there are many—that I would regret never getting a chance to play. Given the limitations of time that a Bucket List implies, I would rather return to some of my favorites. I have thought about them so often, “visited” them on the Internet, and reviewed the Course Guide that they have become fast, but long lost, friends with whom I would want one more visit.

In order -- and I haven't made much progress!

1)  Yeamans Hall
2)  Lahinch
3)  Merion East  (done!)
4)  NGLA
5)  Shoreacres
6)  Myopia Hunt Club
7)  Garden City GC
8)  Cypress Point
9)  TCC Brookline
10)  Glens Falls

There could be 100 courses on a "must play" list.  ANGC would definitely be on a must play list, but not really in the top 10 for me.  Ditto Pebble.  Oakmont would be close to making my top 10.

There are also great courses on my DON'T play list.  The top of this list for me is Pine Valley.  PV is one course I'd like to SEE and to walk multiple times and examine in fine detail -- but I think trying to play it would be a disaster for me -- too many places to get irretrievably hung up, it would be a slog.  Pinehurst #2 is on my "don't play" list also.  Reason for that is my generally inaccurate iron play -- there would be too many places where I was in the worst position around the greens and would have no shot, once again a slog.

You'll note that many of my bucket list courses are "smaller", more intimate in scale -- or perhaps include some special "experience" element of a golf visit.  Ones with spectacular settings (i.e. Pebble, Banff) that grab the eye and distract score lower for me, as do courses with expansive large scale.
O fools!  who drudge from morn til night
And dream your way of life is wise,
Come hither!  prove a happier plight,

I have never been to Portugal and have a bunch of different recommendations there from different people.  Troia was on the top 10 ever list of an old acquaintance, and though I presume that was nuts it has been on my mind the longest.

It's odd how some people's notes about the courses sound as if they've already been there and made up their minds about it!  I should have just listed Morocco and Portugal as places and left it at that, since there are a bunch of possibilities in each.  My favorites in Asia were rarely the ines I had expectations of.
