What is the Shortest Hole....
« on: March 21, 2021, 10:22:25 PM »
 • on an 18 hole course, 6000+ yds, you know of...?
 • on a "Top 300" course...?
 • made in the last 10 years?
Is #7 Pebble...#13 Merion, as low as it goes for the sacred pantheons? Is anybody making an really short hole on a full size course?

There was a hole on a frequent course of my youth that was 60 yards to a fairly big domed green, and I miss it now (btw, thsi course at the same time, used to feature one of the few holes (back then) that could be played over 600 yards... certainly giving this course what would've had to have been one of the greatest differences in a hole distance on one course ever...

How long is the short par three, I think 15, at Lakeside?

Fossil Trace #5.... I think it's 96 yards.

I don't think there is anything double digits in the UK on a top 200 course.

Courses at 6000 yards or more would take a lot out also, there is a tiny one (4th) at Ilfracoombe 87 yards I think. In my home county Gloucestershire the 8th at Cirencester used to be 96 yards and was a great hole but its NLE as a new road ploughed through about 20 years ago.

Windemere has a very short one maybe 75 yards.

As a GB & I top 100 course it is probably 126 yards...the postage stamp.

The 5th, "Tiddler", at Saunton East is about 120 yds.
The 7th at Royal Porthcawl is about 120 yds.
There's a 90 yd downhill from a cliff edge tee hole at Okehampton.
I recall Tom D mentioning an approx 70 yd hole on a course in northern Argentina. Can't recall the name of the course. Do recall looking at it on googleearth and thinking it looked a pretty cool/evil hole.

Both Red #8 and Blue #5 at Streamsong can be setup to play under 100 yards.

It's at La Cumbre Golf Club, and the hole is 66 yards.  Randy Thompson took us there.  It sounded like a total gimmick, but it is a serious golf hole that could mess up your round.  It was a lovely course, too, but probably not "top 300".

Pocono Manor also had that weird little 77-yard drop shot.

But on a top course, the 7th at Pebble Beach wins.  I think it's 107 from the back edge of the tee, and if you tried to play it 10 yards farther on that line, you'd fall to your death.

St George's Hill has that nasty 107 yarder, the 11th.

I remember playing the Pocono Manor hole not long after hurricane Gloria. The value of this type of hole to me is that it tests the golfers ability to hit a half shot or knockdown shot. Even low digit players can struggle on this type of hole.

Two shorties I like are LuLu #4 and Manufacturers # 8.

V,

The two that probably best satisfy your three qualifications are found in the same neighborhood:

In Chicagoland I’ll nominate 13 at Shoreacres, 10 at Chicago Golf, 12 at Beverly and 13 at Olympia Fields North. They all have available back tee locations but play nicely from around 120-130.

The 5th hole at Bandon Trails is special.

The 16th at Northwest Gold Club(Donegal) tips out at 93 yards, and is usually played in the 80-90 yard range.

and is  a fabulous hole..

Just saw it is NOT ranked by Golf Digest in Ireland's Top 100, and a quick scroll through that debacle of a sponsor tainted list would make PGA National blush(the most aptly named course in the world ::) ).
Northwest GC is Rated 80th by "Top 100 Courses" and if there are 79 better courses in Ireland, no one should ever go anywhere else

It's 95 yards I think, but not sure if it is in the regular rotation now or not.

It's slightly uphill, which makes the bunkers on the right very intimidating.

I've only seen photos of Pocono Manor but I thought #17 at Paxon Hollow in the Philly suburbs looked similar.  I think it was about 110 yards and dropped what seemed like 50+ feet from tee to green.

Same with Merion West's 7th. Both are disqualified because they are under 6000 yards!

As Tim Martin mentioned, the 7th at Pocono Manor at 77 yards might be the longest on a course over 6,000 yards.

It is steeply downhill, crosses a creek and requires a wedge brought back to hip height.

I played in a Met area qualifier a couple of years ago and it was in use. I did not make either 2 or 20 (4).

8th hole 120 yds, Channel Course at Burnham & Berrow (5,800 yds) .. as experienced by quite a few posters herein a couple of days after the St Enodoc Buda. As one Buda participant remarked afterwards .."Every course should have a hole like the 8th on The Channel course."

Also Adrians rascally 1st on his Stranahan course near Bristol. 100 yds of delightful evilness! :)
