Kalen recently showed he has trouble thinking outside of the box, and adheres to the "conventional" wisdom about match play vs. medal play.

...
P.S.  Medal vs Match play falls in the category of "it depends".  Individual matches or a few guys looking for a fun weekend, match play of course.  But for a 2 day local weekend tourney with 50+ players, good luck running a match-play to determine that...

So for Kalen's benefit, I decided to try to run The Players Championship as a match play event. I Googled to find out how many competitors the tournament has, and found that traditionally it has had 144. So I proceeded to organize a 144 player match play. Unfortunately, when I went to find the actual players, it turns out they increased the field to 154 for this year. I will stick with 144 for now as 154 is not evenly divisible by 3, and I had already put a bunch of time in seeding a 144 player tournment.

The first round format is threesomes with each person engaged in two matches, one with each of the other members of the threesome. The seeding was to order the players by world rank from 1 to 144, and then form threesomes of as even total seeding as possible. After each threesome, you see the sum of the seedings.

I will try to score and reseed after each round, but may fall behind the tournament as it can be time consuming. I will try to record each players scores after each round so that I can eventually work through generating the results if I can't keep up with the tournament.

The seeded threesomes:

1   Johnson, Dustin

Are you simulating a "match play" result between players who aren't in the same group seeing what the other is doing?

Garland,

You have piqued my interest.  I've never seen 3 players in a group, all playing match play against each other.  I suppose this is plausible, but sure seems to complicate things more than a bit.   Be curios to see more details around determining who advances and how...

I suspect a Baldrick-like ‘cunning plan’ is afoot here with an even more cunning Blackadder-like element included! :)

That is correct. This is an attempt at proof of concept that may actually put in play at some time.

The Ryder cup at my club is done with three teams, so individual matches are done exactly that way.

You could actually have them play match play against every other player in the event...

the math can work if you play them against their two playing partners AND the three in the group in front or behind them. This would reduce the field by 6 each of the first two days then against their playing partner (as twosomes) over the weekend.

144 / 6 = 24
24 / 6 = 4 finalists after Friday
They play head to head on Sat with the winners squaring off on Sunday

What do you do if a winner from Friday misses the cut?

Not in a real match play event. For a real match, you have to observe your opponent.

Since this is only proof of concept, I will make a substitution.

This is a Herculean task and I appreciate it. Might not tell us who the best Match player is...but might help me make a few good Masters picks in a few weeks.

Round 2 results. The ordering is by matches won followed by holes not needed in win.
For example, with Lee 2 + 2 = 4 matches won. And, he closed out his round one opponents with a total of 7 holes
remaining in the round, and his round 2 opponents with 8 holes remaining, for a total of 15 holes remaining.
Morikawa, Collin, Taylor, Nick, Griffin, Lanto, Scheffler, Scottie, Leishman, Marc, and Lee, Kyoung-Hoon are tied around the 72nd position, so they must play a sudden death playoff to drop off two of them, and leave 72 players for the final two rounds.

Re: The Players Championship conducted as Match Play
« Reply #13 on: March 18, 2021, 03:42:05 PM »
Si Woo Kim leads after three round of the match play. He has won 4+2=6 matches, with a total of 10+3=13 holes not needed to be played due to him closing out the opponents early. DeChambeau and Ancer are the only other golfers that have won all six matches. If one player in the final threesome wins both matches, he will be the winner.

Several players that made the cut in match play, didn't make the cut in medal play. Therefore, when you see Name1/Name2, the first person made the cut in match play, but not in medal play. When this happened, I substituted Name2's scores for the final two rounds.

Garland:

All those numbers are not very exciting to look at, but, I think  you should do a hole by hole look at the final matches, as I just did.  It would have been a much much different thing to watch, even discounting that the results might have been completely different if the three guys were playing head to head and seeing what they had to beat.

I am first just struggling to get the results done. A dive in to specific matches and other things can be done later.

I would note that if the last threesome (assuming leaders go off last) went something like
Kim
4   4   3   4   5   4   4   3   5   36   4   4   4   3   5   4   6   3   4   37   73   1
DeChambeau
4   4   3   4   5   4   4   3   5   36   4   4   4   3   5   4   5   4   4   37   73   1
Ancer
4   4   3   4   5   4   4   3   5   36   4   4   4   3   5   4   5   3   5   37   73   1
And, no one in the second to last threesome scored more that 1.5, then Westwood could still win the event.
For that matter, suppose Gooch shot 59, and closed out both opponents with 8 holes to play, he could still win.

I had assumed the more conventional knockout style associated with Match Play.

Assuming a 144 person event:

Thursday - 144 players in 48 groups of 3.  Winner of each group advances, losers go home
Friday - 48 players in 16 groups of 3.  Same thing, winner advances, others go home
Saturday Morning - 16 in 8 groups of 2
Saturday Afternoon - 8 in 4 groups of 2
Sunday Morning - 4 in 2 groups of 2
Sunday Afternoon - Final 2 to determine a winner

Kalen,

Boring TV Sunday afternoon!

Come on man! Break some conventions! Think outside the box!

Your assignment, should you choose to do it, is to work something out with losers brackets. 😊🤔

I just did the last three guys head to head.  There was a winner.  Do you want the spoiler alert?

Also, do you remember who JT lost to?  I assume Westwood must have lost to DeChambeau on Saturday.

J T halved with Denny McCarthy on day 2.
Westwood lost to Si Woo Kim on day 3.

If you want to post the winner, go ahead. I'll cover the rest of the positions.

Okay, here is the final three-way match for the TPC title:

Front nine:

See Woo Kim birdies the first hole to go one up in both matches.
Abe Ancer birdies #2 to get back to AS.
All pars at the third.

Ancer birdies #4 to go one up on Kim and two up on Bryson.  Kim bogeys, but still goes two up on Bryson with his double.
All pars at the fifth.
Kim birdies the sixth and Ancer bogeys.  Ancer-Kim AS; Kim 3 up on Bryson; Ancer 1 up on Bryson.

Bryson birdies the seventh to get a hole back vs. two pars.
Kim pars the eighth while the others make bogey.
All pars at nine.  Kim is 3 up on Bryson and 1 up on Ancer.  Ancer and Bryson AS.

Back nine:

Kim birdies the tenth and Ancer bogeys.  Kim 4 up on Bryson and 2 up on Ancer.
Ancer birdies the eleventh against two pars.
Kim bogeys the twelfth while the others birdie.  Kim 3 up on Bryson and AS with Ancer.  Ancer and Bryson still AS.

Bryson and Kim birdie the 13th, par for Ancer.
Ancer pars 14, Bryson and Kim make bogey, right back to where they were.
Ancer bogeys 15 vs. two pars.  Kim is dormie on Bryson with three to go, Kim one up on Ancer, Bryson one up on Ancer.

Sixteen:  Bryson's eagle keeps him alive.  Kim birdies to get 2 up on Ancer.
Seventeen:  Bryson pars and the others bogey.  Ancer has lost both matches.  Kim one up on Bryson headed to 18 tee.
Eighteen:  Both men par, Kim holds on for a 1 up victory.

That would have been a fairly exciting match, if they had actually all played the same when paired together.  With no great round from JT to focus on, you've gotta watch the swings of fortune, even if the standard of play is not quite as high.

Tom,

If you ever get tired of this golf architecture thing, then maybe there is a future for you in play by play announcing. ;D

What I find surprising about Kim's win is that when I started this, I didn't expect anyone was going to go 8 and 0 in their matches. I expected some golfers might win 7 or 7.5 and one be declared winner by requiring the least number of holes to get there.

That was one of my alternate career ideas when I was 15, but I correctly identified that it was even more dominated by nepotism and ex-jocks than golf course architecture!  ;D
