Tom does the math, Si Woo Kim wins the Players Championship Match Play

Final results are below. The most obvious thing to research is how Tommy Fleetwood managed to miss the medal play cut, but with a substitution of Jason Kokrak, who missed the match play cut, Tommy ended up in second place.

Hopefully it is not a spreadsheet formula mistake on my part. As a side note to that, I would recommend avoiding Google Sheets for significant spreadsheet applications. I suffered from using that choice on my Chromebook. I should have done this exercise on my Windows laptop.

Although Tommy Fleetwood shot high enough scores in the first two rounds to miss the medal play cut, all his matches in the first two rounds were against players that also missed the medal play cut. Making it through with 3.5 points out of 4 allowed his substitute to take his points to a high finish with two fine rounds in rounds 3 and 4.

I wondered how much water hazard penalties affected the scores of those players that made the match play cut, but not the medal play cut. So I used shot tracker to calculate the penalties. If the penalty caused the loss of distance as well as the penalty stroke such as 17 where either the player re-teed, or hit from the drop area, I counted the penalty as two vs. one stroke where the drop was near the ending location of the previous shot.

As can be seen below, 10 of 19 would have made the cut at 144.

Are you simulating a "match play" result between players who aren't in the same group seeing what the other is doing?

That is correct. This is an attempt at proof of concept that may actually put in play at some time.

Thomas/Garland, the Copa Los Andes, a highly regarded international tournament is played with 3 simultaneous matches per group. It has been played since 1940 with foursomes in the morning and individual match play in the afternoon.
