11 at the Club at Black Rock is one I really like.

A visual hazard; much like a pond; but a bit taller and certainly less forgiving if struck with a mishit.

I like it.

Phil:  What is that hole gimmicky, more than any other hole in the desert?

IIRC it doesn't quite fit into the routing, you have to come back a long way from the green to play the next hole.  I'm not a fan of that, but there are a lot of modern courses that have a par-3 like that.

Is it the hole itself or the surrounds that make things gimmicky?
Also, should yee olde famous/epic holes be considered gimmicky? Or do their classic and historical nature preclude them from such a description?

Not to be heretical, but CPC's #16 with its "special" rule (the ocean is part of the course and not a PA) is gimmicky IMO but one which is probably in everyone's mind the minute they pull into the parking lot.

I think many people would say Mike Strantz built some gimmicky holes, and I wouldn't disagree. But I still love them.

If they were almost anywhere else, the 13th at North Berwick and the 17th at The Old Course would be seen as gimmicky.

I like both of those more than the hole pictured in the OP  ;D .

The hole in the OP gives the Dell Hole a bad name.
