The Concession

Is anyone familiar with this course?  The inspiration drawn from Jack’s Cup-tying concession to Tony Jacklin on the final hole of the ‘69 Ryder Cup is noteworthy.  Do the course and club live up to that level of sportsmanship and friendship?  Which clubs have memberships that exemplify the ideals of friendly competition and fair play to which The Concession’s name aspires?

I played it a long time ago, and was paired-up / chaperoned with a really nice gentleman 20-ish years older than me.  I was 30 ish, he was 50 ish.  Not a really good player, but tremendously kind and friendly to someone he just met.  It turned-out he graduated from the same business school as me, so we had a good lunch afterwards talking about a variety of things including what type of golf club ownership structure is best.  He shot around 95, but I really wound-up enjoying the round and lunch despite being a little concerned after the first few holes.

With respect to the golf course, I liked it.  Pretty playable off the tee, but you need to be able to putt, chip, and pitch really well or I could see the course being pretty frustrating.  I sprayed the ball back then, but could chip, pitch, and putt well so I thought the course was really good.  Some might find the green complexes a bit extreme and definitely not designed to be user-friendly for the demographic that probably makes up most of the membership.

I am seeing a lot of old cups on the greens on the broadcast. For the maintenance guys here why do you think that is? I have never noticed so many old cups on a PGA tour course before. :o

It seems like an issue of replacing hole plugs with the grain pointed the wrong way, so they’re extra visible, but I’m not sure. Could also be repaired spots?

Old plugs where grain doesnt match up perfectly.

I’m volunteering at Concession doing Shotlink.  I live in the winter  about a mile from Concession at Lakewood National. Yesterday was my first real eyes on the course.  It’s a very secluded course from hole to hole. Each hole is separate from the other.  The natural vegetation is robust and well placed.  More than once we would be searching for balls in the brush from balls that were on the wrong line.  The bunkering is impressive.  The greens and surrounds are where the tournament will be decided.  Each pin area on the greens require precise shot making.  On 16 Rory and Cameron Champ carried a lake at 367 with 65 to the pin.  Let’s see what today brings?

Completed by Nicklaus immediately after Sebonack this design was a change in direction for him. It appears he was greatly influenced working with someone who posts frequently on this site. :-)

North Palm Beach CC & Old Corkscrew followed, as well. Both of which have Non-Nicklaus, type green complexes.

I officiated at the NCAAs there when Bryson won.  I saw at least one ball putted off a green in every one of the 6 rounds I walked and I was with some of the best players that week.


Tee to green I liked the course, but the green complexes seemed over the top to me.

I played it once a couple years ago.


The members call it "The Concussion" for how hard it plays.  The secluded feeling is a nice change of pace for Florida golf.  You really only see homes from one or two holes, otherwise you're mostly isolated in the Florida scrub and swamps.  I recall the greens complexes being pretty wicked, with some treacherous runoff areas and big internal contours.  The bunkering throughout was interesting and had variety but I felt like a lot of holes were hemmed in by water and/or dense vegetation that gave you few places to miss.  It's definitely a "championship" course and while the course is visually appealing (and the clubhouse atmosphere friendly), it was just too unforgiving of a course to be a place I would want to play frequently.

I've never seen so many pros alternate between chipping short and having it come back and chipping a hair longer and watching it go over the other side of the green.  I don't mind difficult golf courses, but this just seems like it would be annoying to play.

Excellent points. That being said Old Corkscrew is not the place you want to launch your first tee shot after shoveling snow in Chicago for 4 months. Pretty penal track for the average player.

That hole location on 13 today looked downright sadistic.  With the pros struggling with it that much, can't even imagine how even single digits caps would finish the hole...

Guys on tour really have a strong skill set.  -5 per day to lead.  -4 per day to be in 4th place.  And though I've only played it once, I bet if you had 100 scratch golfers play from their tees, at least 20 wouldn't break 80.

I played it with Tony Jacklin shortly after it opened. I remember it being very beautiful, very very difficult, the greens very severe and bunkering that I thought was really rather over the top.

Scratch as in a zero handicap at their home course? from the back Concession tees? I'd go with 60 would not break 80-(if the wind blew? 80 would not)

I'm with Jeff Warne--except 80 might be on the low side. PGAT players and scratch club golfers aren't even playing the same sport.

Yes.  And Morikawa actually bogied two par fives on Sat and one on Thursday.  And you could argue one of those is a par 4 1/2 in length maybe.

I could be wrong but I suspect you are referring to the membership being older with generally higher handicaps, please correct me if I'm wrong. Going with that assumption for a moment, do you really think it true that...let's call them weaker players.. mightn't enjoy the challenge and get more fun out of green complexes as described even if their scores are higher ?
