A nice sounding venture. More would be even better.
Once upon a time however, just about every city/town municipal park in the U.K. had a putting green, a pitch-n-putt course, a bowling green, some tennis courts etc etc.
They may not have been great but they existed, they were cheap and they were where many of us first took up the game. Fun times with family members and mates. No longer. Now such facilities are pretty rare. Where have they gone or maybe what is the money that used to be spent on them now being spent on?

Who is doing the course and practice area work for this?

Nice to see it happening, as long as it is affordable for all.

Thanks for the weblink Niall.
I note that the R&A’s chosen spot for their proposed project at Lethamhill is already one of the facilities mentioned in the Glasgow facilities weblink you highlight.
Seems like the proposal is more of a redevelopment under new ownership by the R&A of an existing not dissimilar facility owned and operated by Glasgow City Council? Council budget cuts and spending on other issues involved perhaps?
Let us hope that there are legit golfing reasons for this project occurring rather than some politico behind the scenes backscratching shenanigans.
Nice that in other areas like Leeds and Cleeve municipal facilities have recently been saved and yippee too.
Shame about the dozens of other locations whether they be formal courses or lessor facilities etc in local parks that have closed over the last few decades.

Great project and happy the R&A is taking responsibility for growing the game in their own backyard as a pilot. I would like to learn more about the financials for sustainability and what, if any, subsidies the R&A will provide longer term. Or if they are only providing the up front money for the renovation and then hand it off to who?  Will they contract with an operator or is that known?

Jeff not sure about the finer points of the project but the course manager was a direct employment by the R&A.

Mark

Are you saying that the greenkeeper was an R&A employee, or will be an R&A employee ?
