GolfClubAtlas, version 2021 New
« on: February 15, 2021, 05:58:34 PM »
Hindsight is 20/20 but hindsight isn't required to realize that 2020 was horrific. Count this yearly post among the many things delayed. Mercifully I have avoided Covid, so far, but I did require two epidurals in the past 150 days to ameliorate a compressed disc, which allows me to identify with the 2020 theme that life is fragile and that nothing is guaranteed. Maladies stress the need to enjoy what you do on a daily basis. Given a wonky wrist which developed a few years ago and now a temperamental back, maximizing time on courses has never been more precious and where I play more selective. GolfClubAtlas’s mission to showcase and discuss where great golf exists rings ever louder. We are off to a grand start with Mike Dutton’s Feature Interview on 9-holers and a profile on one of the most important courses in the modern era, Harbour Town.

Ben, Joe and I continue to strive to make GolfClubAtlas the best it can be. To that end, we intend to freshen its presentation and below is an early stage mock draft:

THANK YOU to everyone listed in the Contribution Section for helping to make the upgrade feasible. Our product remains lean, crisp, and commercial free and we regularly strive to offer quality content via course profiles and Feature Interviews and we wish more people would contribute substantive In My Opinion pieces like Dean Knuth’s recently posted one on William Watson. Early last summer,  I warned Chris Buie, who helps me assemble everything into the site, to be prepared for an avalanche of such entries. I erroneously thought people would have the time to knock out treatises on niche subjects about golf course architecture. That didn’t happen but be sure that we hope to inspire more of you to do so.

GolfClubAtlas has no space constraints and is therefore an ideal platform for deep-diving and reflects my enjoyment of ‘long form writing.’ Is this widely shared or am I Victorian and out of date? GolfClubAtlas can always pivot but against a backdrop of so many positive comments, I generally end up at 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

Still, podcasts are the rage and I have been talking with Vaughn Halyard about expanding the mix at GolfClubAtlas. To that end, he and Connor Lewis recently filmed a group of ne’er-do-wells at GCA world headquarters and that will serve as the March Feature Interview. If it’s well received, you have Vaughn to blame and a trend begun! All kinds of interesting people regularly come through Southern Pines/Pinehurst, so there is a potential gold mine of visual content. My technical incompetence remains the only impediment.

I have a worse relationship with technology than I do with putters!

In that vein, my wife gifted me a drone for my May birthday. Eight months later, I’ve yet to understand how to operate it. However, thanks to my wife, we got it airborne over the 4
th green at Kiawah in August:

GolfClubAtlas drone lift-off command center - what could go wrong?!

The GolfClubAtlas drone in action, at least somewhat.

Perhaps I will eventually figure out how it takes pictures versus me taking a picture of it?! No wonder Vaughn routinely calls me a tech luddite.

In terms of site statistics, it all seems good. I annually meet with our hosting site and this is what they told me: GolfClubAtlas is a large, stable website that saw 5,000,000 unique page views for the year 2020 with the Discussion Group forum accounting for 40% of that. Over 300,000 sessions were logged on the forum alone, with average session time remained stable from 2019 in 2020 at about 5 1/2 mins.  Forty-one percent of the GCA viewership do so from their cell phone (which marks a big shift from being the Monday - Thursday desktop workplace 😉 web site just five years ago). No great surprise, the top 3 regions are North America, Northern Europe and Australia. More specifically, the four busiest are England, California, Pennsylvania and Texas. Happily, the fastest growth in sessions came from Ireland, followed by the UK and Canada. Nearly 200,000 different devices logged in during 2020. Our growth rate was near 5%.

An interesting aside is that 'report to the moderator' button was used less in 2020 than any year prior, a very good thing. Poor adult behavior was on display seemingly everywhere else, we don’t want it here. Dick Daley crystalized GolfClubAtlas by kindly writing, ‘You are all a very special caring international community of fascinating people bonded by a common 'exciting, pleasurable’ sporting activity and all its fields of play.’ Indeed, 2020 set some sort of unofficial record for gracious notes and graceful behavior. Let’s perpetuate it! One man identified GolfClubAtlas as 'a port in the storm.' The notion that a web site can do good for the sport it serves while simultaneously enriching the lives of its own participants is a grand achievement in which everyone should take pride.

For architecture, renovations and restorations continue to enhance the quality of the game around the world and compliment the dozen or so significant new courses that come on-line every year. Club technology marches on, reaching new heights in cost and performance . I have 4 sets of clubs in my garage -  a hickory equivalent 7 iron that I can carry 130 yards, a Japanese blade 7 iron that goes 145 yards, a muscle back blade with less loft that’s good for 160 yards and a hyped-up, turned-down, 30 degree beast that I can wallop nearly 170 yards. And guess what? Phil Mickelson would hit it 215 yards! That’s the rub, an ever increasing disconnect between the Tour Player and a single digit handicap player. I heard last weekend in Arizona that a pro was ‘sneaky long’ after he hit it 325 yards!  :-X  Is this widening chasm healthy? For me, the women’s game is more relatable and therefore more watchable. However, now I hear that Maria Fassi is averaging nearly 300 yards off the tee, so … yikes!

I updated the 147 Custodians this morning - have a look! The feedback was off-the-charts  fantastic from the initial endeavor, so thank you. Rather than add a single course to get to 148, I made more changes. There are several hundred courses/clubs out there that fit my criteria as a Custodian. At one addition a year, many would never get recognized, so the list turned over about 10%. Showcasing high quality golf in less obvious places like Iowa and Cleveland brings genuine pleasure.

What does 2021 hold? Joe recently mused, ‘Recreational golf, while one of the social activities largely spared by COVID restrictions, was significantly affected in several ways, some good, some not. Early in the pandemic, under the dubious concerns of surface transmission; removing flagsticks, raking bunkers and taking caddies became verboten. There was an increase in walking and push carts that became not only fashionable where previously not permitted, but impossible to find. At the same time golf cart usage increased because sharing was not deemed appropriate and quartets, even quintets, zoomed down fairways, resembling a tank assault. With the removal of rakes, bunkers became truly hazardous but often local rules allowed for preferred lies and the old ‘sand tee’ was reborn. The game is played more frequently than ever but looked a little different. Nearly a year on, the ramifications of these Covid modifications linger in many places, affecting the genteel game both positively and otherwise. Let’s hope that ultimately we’ll embrace the core values of the game rather than the expedient aberrations.’

Very true! The game is the game and it doesn’t need to be dolled up to be enjoyable. Surely, music (!) from a cart (!!) one fairway over is an assault on human decency; it’s why one course was expunged from the 147. This web site is definitely not the most glamorous, high tech offering and in some ways parallels my favorite Netflix series, Criminal, set in the UK. The television series features a mere three areas (the interrogation room, the adjacent room behind the mirror, and a hallway. That’s it. No cars flipping, nothing blowing up, just great acting (David Tennant, Sharon Horgan, etc), tight scripts and good cinematography. It’s both mesmerizing and addictive without being showy or flamboyant. Kind of like golf and GolfClubAtlas – artfully focused on reality.

Personally, the pandemic meant less travel and a renewed appreciation for life's day-to-day offerings  -  languid dog walks; the Queen’s Gambit which provided a respite from being thwarted at every turn by my 17 year old son (who now starts each game without a knight  :-\ ; and thrashing  J.C. Jones (or at least going 3-0-1) when he charged over from Charlotte. Sadly, through scientific research, I proved that having 6 putters in the garage doesn't help you hole more putts than 4. ???

I hope that you agree that GolfClubAtlas steadfastly honors its long-running mission to candidly discuss and honestly disseminate valuable information toward the betterment of the sport? If not, let us know. What can or should we do better? Bottom line is that through good times and bad, GolfClubAtlas will be there, as long as you are. This is a team effort and together we can do much.

Best wishes for a great 2021 from,

Ben, Joe and Ran

Ran,
'Twas a strange year indeed. GCA has done well to continue through this ghastly episode.
Here in Oz we have been impacted to a lesser degree than almost anywhere on planet Earth. Golf in particular seems to have been seriously impacted only in Victoria during their interminable lockdown.
Thanks for your perseverance and I think podcasts would be a clever and instructive addition to your offerings.
Orra best and here's hoping vaccinations start to take the sting out of our travail.
Cheers Colin

The one thing consistent about GCAers is, We Repel Women. :)

We used to have a few women, but now we seem to have none. I have had the same wife for 28 years, my wife counts a few GCAers as Broadway Friends, I work mainly with women, and I genuinely enjoy playing golf with women.

But We Repel Women!

I honestly don't have an answer. I am not the politically correct type, but they are 51% of the population so maybe a Feature Interview with a women from a college golf team or a Greenskeeper?

My son takes his Girlfriend out to the Short Course at his club, and she seems to genuinely like it!! Screw the architecture, I will take Anne's swing all day long:

Thanks, Ran.
You know what I'd like? I'd like it if you, Ben and Joe participated much more frequently day-to-day, ie posting your thoughts on various threads. I know you all have golf-related day jobs + you already run the site itself; but I can't think of a single thread/topic that wouldn't be made better and more interesting by your input & opinions.

Think of it like the ruling triumvirate donning disguises to walk freely among their common folks and chatting a bit with the hoi polloi :)

The podcast with Vaughn is great, as are your reviews, but I think I'd like your opinions less filtered/processed and more spontaneous -- as you, Ben and Joe react 'in real time' to the ideas and debates the come up on the discussion board

Thanks, and best wishes

Ran,

I’ve told you personally...
and mentioned on this site many times... that this website changed the arc of my life by introducing me to like-minded individuals who welcomed me into their golfing lives. The number of true friends I now have as a direct result of this site is staggering. For that, I can’t thank you enough.

As for your physical ailments... it doesn’t get better as you age! Trust me... your best golf is behind you. Don’t be depressed by that. Try to ENJOY the game more and be less critical of your play. Your joy of life will benefit as a result.

Finally, who knew you were an artistic critic in addition to your golf architecture review prowess? Are you going to add a “Must Watch” video column?

Finally-finally, this is my annual call for more participation by you. I’d love to see a weekly, or bi-weekly, posting by you to engage the punters. For some time now your absence has been glaring.

Love ya... mean it!

Gentlemen - Very nice! Thank you for the updates and the improvements....and as always, I enjoy Ran's annual state-of-the-website and  game address. Hard to believe I've been tuning in now for about 21 years. Ever since Ron Prichard, Brad Klein and others were raving about this platform at Holston Hills in 2000, I've been right here as a student learning from everyone collectively. Thank you again Ran, Ben, Joe, Chris and all our contributors. Cheers! DW

Thank you Ran for the update to all. We should take pride in not allowing the world pandemic, political polarity, and the degradation of civil discourse to threaten the DG here.

I guess Rhode Island CC is the new addition? I didn't screen grab or anything the previous one, but as it is 148 I'm guessing.

I have 3 humble suggestions and happy to contribute more if needed (as many of us are), to the following:

  • Increased utility of the search function. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but it has never really been that functional and leaves me wanting some more utility to search more specifically.
  • As we have taken back the veil of who posters are by requiring real names (good move), the option or ability to have someone do a simple profile others can click on. Would be nice to see where people are located, where they golf, etc.
  • Ability to use the calendar for posters to put their events (Buda/Mashie/etc.) onto the calendar for reference. Perhaps a link to the master thread for those events would prove useful. There aren't dozens of events, but the ones that are known or maybe spontaneously someone offers 7 guest spots at their club for a particular day would be nice.

I do agree that there are some women who are interested in GCA and why they aren't here or maybe were here and left I don't have any idea. Making them welcome or actively recruiting some would be an enhancement IMO.

Keep up the great work as it is an enjoyable place to be during trying times.

God bless,
Jeff

Ran (and Ben and Joe)--

Keep up the outstanding work (9.9 on Doak scale...lack of presence on Discussion Group kept you from a 10...even if most recognize your time is your most limited resource).

Naturally I went to update my spreadsheet which then led me to do some analysis:

1.  Turnover...20 adds and 19 drops...adds dominated by those in USA (16), drops also but not as dominant (7).  Other major regional adds drops are:

AU/NZ     Add 3 Drop 1...Net +2
GB&I       Add 0 Drop 5...Net -5
Cont Eur  Add 0 Drop 3...Net -3
Rest Am  Add 1 Drop 1...Net  0
Asia        Add 0 Drop 1...Net -1
Africa      Add 0 Drop 1...Net -1
USA        Add 16 Drop 7...Net +9
Total       Add 20 Drop 19...Net +1

Looking another way:

Region      148      147
Africa           0      1          -1
Asia             2       3          -1
AU/NZ        11           9           2
Cont Eur          9        12          -3
GB&I                 46        51          -5
Caribbean etc     1          1           0
Canada               7          7           0
S America           1          1           0
USA                   71       62           9

Total                 148     147          1

Makes morning headline "Big shift from Cont Euro and GB&I to USA and AU/NZ regions on GCA's 147 Custodians"  ;D

From personal play standpoint, have played 140 of 148 including 98 of first 100.  Am missing Trinity Forest and Scottsdale Nat'l in first 100 and Fraserburgh, Pennard, Minchinhampton, Pedrena, Fano, and Goswick among those in 101-148 slots.

Fake News!!!

In addition to misrepresentation and underreporting, you're conveniently leaving out the one and only time I agreed to be paired with you and you shot 1000.

Needless to say and nonetheless, I was 10-0-1 in post round consumption vs the decrepit Ran.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Very nicely stated, Ran.  As one of the newer GCA'ers, I can confirm that the community remains warm and inviting to newbies as well.  I have also been pleasantly surprised how engaging longtime members are with my posts including the some of the architectural titans!

Ran,
Thanks for the annual message. I appreciate the new look for the site and desire to freshen things, but agree with others that a more effective search function and opportunity for member profiles would be a nice add.
For me, at least, the most important thing remains the content. There is no other resource as comprehensive as this one, at least when it comes to reflecting the type of golf courses that interest me. I also have numerous friends that also use the site as a reference, though they have little interest in posting. A more effective search function would only enhance usage of the discussion group, I think.

As for your increased participation - that would be great. But like all of us, I'm sure you have limited time. Course profiles, feature interviews, and more long-term projects are far more valuable than discussing the topic of the day.

In the 147+1 comments on Austin GC, you quote Ben Crenshaw as saying "It is amazing how many things a course can do without." The key is to focus on what does matter, and Golf Club Atlas does that wonderfully. Thanks for keeping it going.

Love the new look. Thanks Ran for not only keeping the site up and running but improving it, especially without adding a "like" button.  GCA has been even more important for me during this Covid-19 year. I have spent more time than ever on the site. It is an important part of the lives of so many folks. It would be difficult to find a replacement.

I am sorry to hear about your physical woes. I have had a foot injury that has kept me off the courses since September. It is doing better and I am even skiing. I'll be able to play once it gets warm enough. Happy to hear of your thrashing of J.C. I do enjoy trying to beat him when he gets to Ballyhack. Hopefully, we can tee it up sometime when I come down to Dormie.

Thanks to Ran, Joe and Ben for all that you do for GCA. I've been reading this site since 2000 when I searched (yahoo?) for information on Skokie CC before a High School golf practice and found Ran's write up of the course. I finally joined the forum in January 2005 and haven't looked back  ;D

GCA is a wonderful site, and I mostly appreciate the friendships that have sprung from here. Either locally with our "Minnesota GCA" group which hosts once a month matches at different clubs around town, to running into Joe Andriole* this past summer at White Bear, to meeting up with Ran for a couple beers last month while in Pinehurst. The love of the game and the appreciation of its playing fields are alive and well...with much thanks to Golf Club Atlas.

*Which resulted in a few post round beverages and some lively GCA discussion. Needless to say my wife was none to pleased when I showed up late at the pool for lunch. A fellow WB member had to calm her down by saying "Listen, Pat was really in his element there, you're going to have to give him a pass on this one!  ;) ;D "

Shouldn't GCA be like the clubhouse frozen in time? No air conditioning, the scent of cigars clinging in the air, and a metal spike mark minefield on the floors? Metal lockers that have been there for 100 years? I think the site should be rolled back to a 1996 style website to reflect that feel. Just like we yearn for today's players to play with persimmon and balata, GCA should be written in straight HTML. Craigslist would be a good model.

Just kidding, I support your vision for the site upgrade Ran. Thanks for everything.

It's hard for me to believe that JC caught you 4x in 2020 when you were good enough to beat him, let alone stand up out of your old man's chair.

Were those all by chance post epidural shots?

I travelled 5000 miles for our game, fought COVID risk, mentally prepared and you injured your fragile self walking the dog - so we drank all day. That was just a ploy wasn't it?

Glad that now that you are a GM big shot you didn't forget about all your GCA buddies and decided to update this jalopy.

Well played sir!
