Tommy,

As a "Man of the Cloth", I am guessing you have seen numerous times that the only way to change a "Legacy Organization" is to challenge it from the outside.

I have no idea if Greg Norman is "The Answer" but I really do admire his tenacity:

Norman isn’t known for being shy with his thoughts, either. Though he says he isn’t working with the PGL in any formal capacity, he’s been openly bullish about the league. Late last month, he flew to Saudi Arabia for the Saudi Golf Summit, where he met with PGL financial backers, who are reportedly tied to Saudi oil money.

Now I know a few things about "Saudi oil money", but that is a topic for a different forum. The reality is the USGA will ONLY change if challenged from the outside. Mike Whan seems like a nice guy, but we have enough USGA friends here and offline to know that he is probably a PR plant.

Well I hope he is not a "PR plant." I don't know too much about him other than what has been reported about his work with the LPGA. I hope that he is able to make a difference.

Mike Whan is an adventurous pick for an organization that has perpetually limited itself to cultural and intellectual inbreeding and a bent to internal stasis .

Mike is a personable, bright, high-energy guy who pours his heart and soul into his job. His style mixes a strong dose of humility and self-deprecation with a stern focus on the goal(s) at hand.  He's near universally loved and respected by all the active, and past, LPGA players...and for good reason. His tireless advocacy for that tour worked on so many fronts. It's little stretch to believe he might be the best recent professional sports commissioner, period.

All of the above would suggest it was a killer pick for the USGA, but the inherent provincialist nature of that organization may well prove too frustrating for a guy like Whan. I hope I'm wrong, and time will tell, but the USGA may well have taken the right QB for the wrong team. We'll see.

Steve said it better, but that was my main point/belief...

I suggested to the USGA that perhaps they should offer a pick of  US Women's Open and US Men's Open hats for their membership rewards. After all, which would you prefer, a Torrey Pines, or an Olympic Club hat? Perhaps Whan can help them with this issue. :)

I never thought about that before you posted. My wife is the member of the USGA, but I end up with all of the hats.

Remember who Whan replaced at the LPGA. He came into the hottest of messes, the sh!ttiest of shows, and grew roses.

That GlobalGolfPost story certainly makes it seem as though managing the distance issue over the next several years is Priority 1, as it should be I assume.

We've certainly done our share of hand wringing about that topic around here...will be interesting to see the outcome(s).
