Par-2 on a regular course
« on: February 16, 2021, 09:23:12 AM »
Are there any par-2’s on regular courses?
Thinking here of an essentially regular length 9/18 course where 1 of the holes is purely a probably quite large putting green, ie no formal tee, no formal fairway or rough or forced carry, no ponds or bunkers, just putting surface with tee-blocks positioned on its surface.
A way of dealing with space constraints while preserving the 9/18 hole pattern that some believe vital?

I've thought of that but only as a 19th hole to settle bets. It would seem a goofy thing to do anywhere else.

I think Forrest Richardson designed one of these on a executive-length (par fours and threes) course in AZ.

I think the "Par 2" is a very large putting green with a tee and a hole that changes each day, so it's normally a long, undulating putt.

Certainly saves space if you don't have space for a full par three, etc. to meet a 9 or 18-hole requirement, etc.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

It’s a bye hole at Mountain Shadows — No. 17.5

I’ve designed several, including a few on regulation designs. None to fruition beyond this one. But, I disagree it’s not valid. If done well, it answers all sorts of questions and equalizes players more than at any other teeing ground.

I think it's a great idea on an alternative-style course...and you'd have an asset for Himalayas-style events too.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....
