What would be the most important year(s) in the history of golf?
Not decade or general period of time but specific year(s).

Two years come to mind: 1930 and Jones' slam and 2000-2001 for the Tiger slam. A close third is 1913 and Ouimet at TCC.

I agree with 2000, but not because of Tiger, rather for the creation of the pro V-1. Could throw the years that the Gutty and Haskell came out as well. Nothing changes the game more than step changes in the balls.

I think in many ways 1848, when the gutty ball was introduced. Until then golf was a game played in a small number of towns in the east of Scotland. The greater affordability of the gutty was what started golf on the path to being a global game.

Easy: Sometime in the spring of 1520 when it was finally decided that hitting small balls into holes dug into the ice was absolutely less entertaining than the similar pastime of hitting them on solid ground, into holes dug into swards of grass.

In America, the 5 years from 1895 to 1900. Macdonald laid out his 18 hole course in Wheaton in 1895. Just five years later there were 982 courses in 45 states.

In Australia the visit of MacKenzie in 1926.

But my #1 nomination would be the 4 days of October 24th-27th, 1957. No single event may have brought more new golfers to the game. But even on this illustrious board, I'd bet less than 50% will know what I'm talking about?!?

The answer is 1957 was the year Torakichi Nakamura and Koichi Ono won the world team title by 9! strokes on their home soil of Kasumigaseki Country Club. Their upset win resonated with a population just coming out of the allied oversight following WW2. And it propelled Japanese golf to a level of popularity where they still have more golf courses today than any other country except the United States. It's amazing to me how under the radar the Japanese love of golf remains among westerners.

Actually, the year OTM returned to St. Andrews. Without OTM you don't have MacDonald, Ross, et. al.

I'd disagree with this, or any general commentary about the pro game and championships in this context. For all the tournaments that these three won, if they were not there others would have won them without much else changing other than whom the resulting popular mythos were built around. If you want to focus in on the impact of tournament results than a better case can be made for Ouimet or the Japanese twosome based on the cultural impact.

I can't speak to anything too far in the 19th century or for the UK antiquity, but for American golf:

1894 - all of the scattered pre-history comes together in the germination of a national body and a sanctioned national tournament.
1916 - Jones debuts at Merion, PGA is formed- 1st PGA is played; First Era in GCA about to yield to Golden Age.
1931 - Jones first year in retirement, making films, purchases Fruitlands, steel shafts win the US Open, Golden Age course building ends markedly in the throes of the Depression.
1951 - RTJ first year as "Monster" Open Doctor at Oakland Hills, framing Hogan's amazing return and consecutive victories. Oilman R.J. Jackson receives patent and starts manufacture of first dedicated electric golf cart - "The Arthritis Special."
1962 - IMG's Big Three win all 4 pro majors, Palmer on consecutive Opens, completing the re-elevation of the tournament; Nicklaus 1st and Player's 2nd.  Golf is led by TV and player image forever since; following on, a new era of course building roars.

I've got to think about the the last 60 years before continuing...

"The tee shot must first be hit straight and long between a vast bunker on the left which whispers 'slice' in the player's ear, and a wilderness on the right which induces a hurried hook." -
