Hello Gents!

Looking forward to playing in this one if I can get my back in shape. Have asked around and I'm hearing good things about Meadow Club. What are the thoughts here?

David -

When is the tournament being played?

The Meadow Club in Marin County, CA is a wonderful place. Aside from the golf club buildings, you hardly see a man-made structure in any direction. Deer & wild turkeys roam the course at times.

The course itself is very, very good. Probably not long enough to challenge the young big hitters, but should be plenty enjoyable for mid-am and senior golfers.

But be careful on the drive up to and down from the course!

Yeah, have heard real good things from several buddies who've played there. I looked back here on GCA and saw that there was discussion of a renovation back in 1999. I assume that was done -- at least to some degree?

Yes, the course had a major facelift that was well done by Mike DeVries. Some comments here:

The course usually hosts a college tournament in the fall that produces some low scores given its relatively short length.

Meadow Club's superintendent, Sean Tully (a gca contributor, if I am not mistaken) was the guest on the TalkinGolf History podcast for a series on Alister MacKenzie (episodes 33-36).  Among the wide range of MacKenzie topics covered, he shared quite a bit about what has gone on at Meadow Club over the past 20+ years.  Tully has a unique combination of knowledge and skills, namely golf history and keeping of the green.  The podcasts are great for anyone, but would be especially interesting for anyone with a connection to Meadow Club.

PS - I am not on Twitter any longer, but when I was, Tully was one of my favorite follows.  @tullfescue

I love Meadow Club.  And I think the DeVries work was excellent.
Of these three California Mac courses—Valley Club, Pasatiempo and Meadow Club—it is probably third, but a very close third.
Playable, fun—but challenging enough to be a very good test.
The only negative is the winding mountain road you have to drive to get to it.

Limiting Mac to 3 courses in California is a disservice to the members and devotees of other CA designs such as Valley Club, Green Hills, Claremont, Redlands, Sharp Park & Northwood.  Even Haggin Oaks in Sacramento claims its original South course, now re-named in his honor, was originally his work.

Well he did name Valley Club already. And I don't ever hear anyone at Redlands say they are a Mackenzie course -- but who knows ....

David, you are correct that he already mentioned valley Club and I apologize for missing that.  I think in my mind’s eye I assumed his CA three had to include Cypress and subconsciously assumed the list started there before moving to Pasatiempo.

Is Redlands' MacKenzie pedigree well established? There are definitely some fun holes at that course. I've played it many times over the years.

I'm a regular enough visitor to the Meadow Club and love going up there. First visit was in 99 and have seen the course evolve, they have done a great job up there. It's a great study for anyone.
The drive up, the location, the course, the staff and members is magnificent. Don't miss an opportunity to go there.

Thanks, Padraig. I signed up and will play if my back is okay. Have a surgery consult in early March, so we'll see.

Played the Meadow Club as a teenager and remember they had an unattended gazebo after the 7th or 8th with two bottles of wine in it. My friends and I partook and had a nice buzz which is why I don't rember much of the back nine. ::)
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I had the fortune to be invited by a customer to play the Meadow Club and thought it amazing. This was after the DeVries work. It's certainly not a spectacular looking course but it made you think and while I've never played St. Andrews, it seems that MacKenzie used a number of features similar to that course or at least to links golf. The membership is known for being very skilled.
