No discussion - lift and drop at will
« on: February 02, 2021, 12:26:22 PM »
How about we end the discussions, rulings, interpretations, accusations and shaming and allow players to lift and drop if and when they please.

After all on the Tee and Green one can clean the ball and place it.

Less duff shots from bad lies would speed up the game.
Bunkers wouldn't have to be raked.
Less suspicious whispers.

What's not to like?

I like the concept.

I'd vote for three options that a committee can choose from as a local rule governing play in any given event:
  • Lift and drop at will.
  • Lift and drop never - ball simply cannot be touched once you tee it up... or better yet, has to be dropped legally behind the tee marker before teeing off on each hole. No marking on the green unless interfering with another player's line... or bring back the stymie. I'm here for either.
  • Lift and drop on tees and greens only - Similar to today's rules, but a mandatory penalty stroke for taking unplayable anytime the ball is touched after teeing off and before reaching the putting surface.
Time to stop TigerProofing, and start ChokerProofing.

Evidently there is no longer any need to protect the field. Handing ball to caddie and poking around in ground with three inches of grass hiding motions are beyond reproach

Can I roll it after I've placed it just to get a feel for the grass texture? How about one toss per 9 holes to eliminate those pesky trees?  ::)

Anyone of us who has rolled the ball out of a divot during a casual round is no better. Doesn’t matter if you did it “to protect the architecture” or not.

We can call those the "Crisham rules"

I'm sticking to lift and drop

Would it be lift, clean and place within 6 inches?
This needs clarification and care and maybe continuous supervision as apparently 50% of the worlds population don’t believe the other 50% are able to measure 6 inches accurately.

Place or drop  or nudge or kick  within a clubs length not nearer  the hole.

Reminds me of a great old caddie bet. I'll play you even but I get one throw per nine.

The look on a guys face when you picked up their ball and threw it into a hazard was priceless!

No, if the goal is to "speed up the game"
No free drops-anywhere.
Chunking it to a better place, or taking unplayable would be the options.
In the much discussed recent embedded ball question, neither player would've been affected by playing it where it lay.
Unplayable no slower than a free drop(unless using stroke and distance) and there'd be way fewer.
Players would stop aiming for grandstands.

The problem with pace of play isn't free drops. If they really want to fix the pace of play allow lasers. They end up the correct yardage anyway. Let them get it instantaneously.

Sometimes I wonder where golf might be in a few years time .... move the ball when you want, keep your own score, decide your own rulings etc etc. Whilst all might have a place in casual/social golf there must be a likelihood that such will spill over into other parts of the game. Could be the death of amateur competitive golf at a club level though.
