What do you do to be a happy golfer?
« on: January 18, 2021, 10:25:36 PM »
Do you tee off early?

Do you pay a premium to play on an empty course?

Do you play close to home to limit your commute?

Do you play alone?

Do you walk to save money and get some exercise?

Do you look for balls along the way?

Do you roll the ball and make up your own special rules?

Do you only play at clubs where the members think and look like you?

Do you search out the best deal possible and play on the cheap?

Do you primarily practice?

What work do you put in to be happy at golf?

Playing hickories, period ball, and front tee box does it for me.   Since the old equipment is so unforgiving, I expect plenty of bad shots but cherish the good ones so much more.  Also brings me closer to the history of the game.   Unfortunately I focus too much on scoring with my modern equipment.

Walk and carry and try my hardest to win the $5 or $10 I’m playing for.

I like all forms of golf, but this is it for me.

I play golf with people I like. So if I'm not good, at least the company will be.

I just do everything in my power to avoid those soul sucking 5 hr round situations.  I'm a night own, but I can wake up at 4AM if it means that I can play early and still have most of the day for other things.

In casual play, I definitely use the vintage equipment whenever I can.  It just adds another area of interest as I can try out different clubs and see how they perform.

No idea.

Why would anyone want to be a happy golfer?
Ask not what GolfClubAtlas can do for you; ask what you can do for GolfClubAtlas.

Seek out places like Mystic Dunes.

Seriously. Pure fun.

Always have a small 4ball match play bet for a couple of beers or lottery tickets.

Regardless of how you are paying, there is something to play for, you are always supporting your partner and taking an interest in your "oppositions" score.

The most important aspect of happy golf is that it is more important to be good company than a good golfer. No one cares what any of us shoot, but we do care if you respect the game and are a pleasant person to have a 4 hour walk and a couple of beers afterwards with - When I was younger and trying to be more competitive I did not fully understand this and would sometimes get really wrapped up in how I was playing on a given day, thankfully I have mellowed with age
Do you tee off early? - If playing at the group in the club early enough to be with other players that care about pace of play - weekdays I'll play a lot of afternoon and early evening holes as well

Do you pay a premium to play on an empty course? - I am fortunate that my primary club membership (36 holes) allows me to have an empty evening course almost every day.

Do you play close to home to limit your commute? - I live 5 minutes from my primary club

Do you play alone? -  I like playing some holes in the evening alone but rarely play an entire round by myself

Do you walk to save money and get some exercise? - I usually walk because I think it's a better game when walking - I will occasionally ride on hot days, scramble events, or business type of rounds where my partners are not walkers.

Do you look for balls along the way? - No, but will pick up the $5 ticket when I see something that I would play

Do you roll the ball and make up your own special rules? - Certainly not when playing a competitive round within the group in-season, doesn't really matter the rest of the time

Do you only play at clubs where the members think and look like you? - Not sure what this is getting at - obviously both of my club memberships implicitly have an economic hurdle to membership, thus limiting the pool, I grew up a public course rat and still play a fair bit of public golf - I don't care who plays as long as they show respect for the game

Do you search out the best deal possible and play on the cheap? - No, I am at peace with my golf expenditures, obviously if my economic situation changes I would rethink things

Do you primarily practice? - If you include less than complete rounds as practice then yes

What work do you put in to be happy at golf? - The only work I put in is to try to avoid situations/people that I do not consider conducive to an enjoyable day

Please refer to my tagline
"Golf is happiness. It's intoxication w/o the hangover; stimulation w/o the pills. It's price is high yet its rewards are richer. Some say its a boys pastime but it builds men. It cleanses the mind/rejuvenates the body. It is these things and many more for those of us who truly love it." M.Norman

Prefer a big game- two or three groups-4 balls with multiple side bets, double bogie net max, skins etc.

Walk or ride-depends on course, time of day, players, norm.(if walk-pull cart)

Course-rather play an uncrowded Doak 3 than a crowded 6-anytime.
Thus leaving time for extra holes.Very often tee off at 2 pm and play 36-with multiple 4 balls.
Try to avoid courses where everything is a big deal.....the less fanfare the better.
Net on first tee? I'm in.. Choice of brand of range balls? you probably lost me.
Beer in pro shop fridge sold by the 6 pack? perfect, though I'm not against a cute cart girl.(my wife was one-so there goes conventional wisdom)

Often will play 3-9 holes in the evening solo if trying to knock the rust off or simply get some exercise.

Recently, I am not a happy golfer. I have not played since September because of a posterior tibial tendon issue in my foot.
That said, I enjoy going at my own pace. I play a lot of golf alone or with my wife. three hours or so is what we shoot for.
I do look for golf balls when no one is behind me. I have been a ball hound since I was a kid. It is a hard habit to quit. At Ballyhack there are about five places where I can get rich.
I don't like betting anymore and when alone will roll the ball if I have a dreadful lie.
Nobody thinks the way I do.
I admit I like the conditioning to be excellent. It doesn't have to be green but fast and firm are my preference. I want the greens and bunkers well maintained. Don't care if they are lightning quick.
I am happy if I don't hear any music coming from other golfers.
I sat away from courses I don't like. The older I get the pickier I get.
Where there is no love, put love; there you will find love.

Remind myself that while for others it may be a sport, for me, it is just a game. Hogan may be my favorite golfer, but Hagen is my favorite philosopher.

Only three things:

Play early.

Play with people who care or enjoy about THAT round. Pinehurst or Goat Track CC.

The only work I put in to be happy at golf is the work I do before I get to the golf course. Through experience I've come to realize that I can't truly enjoy (or let myself fully embrace) playing golf if I have on my mind any incomplete assignments or unfinished business or unfulfilled duties and obligations or emails to write or bills to pay; and so I need to do all that 'work' before I can drive to the course and be happy at golf. All of which means that I don't play much golf, but that when I do I'm peaceful and present (relatively speaking) and can really enjoy the experience. And it took me many years even to get just there/here.

Great thread.

1) Joined a club close to home

2) Tee off early on the weekends so I'm home with the wife by 1:00

3) Compete frequently

4) $100 to $200+ at stake virtually every time I play

5) Play very quickly tee to green, but go into my own little bubble when putting -- if the round is meaningful

6) Play in 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes virtually every "club" round

At home, I like playing my home club and putting a little money on the game just so we can talk trash amongst friends.

Away, I love to travel to play different courses.

As most of my life I played pretty crappy architecture courses, I don't need much.  Has to be with dad/bro or friends , otherwise it reminds me of the line from the movie Into The Wild, which I find very true for golf.

I'm on this delightful trek to play 1000 courses (29 to go), so I really enjoy seeing a course I haven't played.  I'm at the point now where I have to travel to see something new - I enjoy the planning, making the lists and checking out the courses ahead of time.

At the course, I usually enjoy a breakfast sandwich from the grill - two eggs, crisp bacon, cheese, a little mayo on Texas Toast - Yum!

Goal 1:  Hit every fairway

Goal 2:  Finish with the same ball I started with

Like Tommy, I am an inveterate ball hawker and look for spots where they may collect - just an environmentalist keeping the natural areas free from litter.

I usually have my camera along and look for interesting places to photograph on the course.

Makes me smile just sitting here thinking about all that.
