Consecutive Holes without a Par Four
« on: January 18, 2021, 05:19:28 PM »
What courses have four or more consecutive holes that exclude par fours?

My home club St Davids Golf Club in Wayne Pa, USA has four.

8 - par 5
9 - par 3 *
10 - par 3
11 - par 5

Interestingly slow play experts say that reachable par 5s and back to back par 3s are the worst for creating slow play.  It’s really not an issue at SDGC because in part the first five holes are par fours, so the course gets everyone moving on a good tempo and 7 and 12 which bookend this set of holes are longer par fours where most members don’t need to have the green clear to hit their second shots.

* Originally was a great par four designed by Donald Ross, but Tilinghast recommended it be shortened for safety around the clubhouse.

Berkshire Red ends with 4 in a row - 5-3-5-3.
I played it last year in a shotgun start, teeing off on the 8th. That gives you seven in a row, because it starts with a 5-3-5 sequence as well.

Can’t beat four but North Berwick has four holes without a par 4 between the 8th and 11th (par 5, 5, 3, 5).

Honourable mention to Callander GC, which has six par 3s in seven holes from the 9th (three 3s, a 4, then another three 3s!).

The Ocean Course at Olympic (circa 1980) started 5, 3, 5, 3 & 5. Then 4 par-4's to finish the front 9.

Inwood CC, Inwood NY, holes 3,4,5 Par 5, holes 6 and 7 par 3s.

It makes up for it with 7 par 4's on the back 9. Unusual sequence, fun golf course.

In before David Ober to say The Victoria Club in Riverside, CA, our home course during my senior year at UC Riverside.  Back nine goes 4, 3, 4....and that's the last par 4 you play.  It finishes 3, 5, 5, 3, 5, 5.

Painswick has a run from 5 thru 10 which includes one of the best par 3s in GB&I, some of the most unusual features in the country and some stunning green locations. I don't know of a more interesting long run of non par 4 holes.

The Highland Course at Primland in Southwest VA starts out 5, 3, 5, 3.

Also, the 11th hole at Gatlinburg GC is a par 4, so it only has 3 in a row.

Holes 7-12 at Garland Valley Resort's Fountain Course.

That's 6.

Crail Balcomie 11-14 goes 5533.  15's a driveable par 4 and 16's another par 3

Lawsonia Links goes 5-3-5-3-5-3 from 9 through 14. What a fun stretch of golf.

I also enjoy the 3-5-5-3 ending of the Cascades up at The Homestead.

Town & Country in Minneapolis has a back nine with only two par 4s - the last being the 13th - and includes three consecutive par 5s:

4-3-5-4-3-5-5-5-3

What an unusual nine. Never seen nine holes with four par fives. Fascinatin. Do you know the story behind that setup?

Minor correction re: Town & Country. It is in St. Paul, just over the Mississippi from Minneapolis.

As for T&C's routing: As one of America's oldest courses, T&C is unusual from start to finish. Nos. 2 & 3 are consecutive par-3s. No. 5 is a par-4 with a blind tee shot down a big hill and an approach up one of the longest and steepest hills you'll ever see on a golf course. No. 6 is long par-4 with a completely blind approach over another big hill. No. 9's approach is another blind shot down another steep hill (open to the public for sledding in the winter), with the skyline of Minneapolis dominating the view.

I could go on, but no need. The course is a Museum of Quirk, and improving year by year as it becomes less forested.

My own home course, Midland Hills (Roseville, Minnesota), used to have four-hole stretch of non-4s from 4 through 7: 3-5-5-3 -- but the Urbina renovation/restoration has converted No. 5 to a long par-4 (Maiden) and reduced the course par to 71.

My club (Victoria Club in Riverside, CA) might hold the record:

13) par 3
14) par 5
15) par 5
16) par 3
17) par 5
18) par 5

So, if my math is correct, that's six in a row.

You beat me to it with Painswick...

5th, par 3
6th, par 3
7th, par 3
8th, par 5
9th, par 5
10th, par 3

Being Painswick all is not as it seems... the 11th is only 246 yds but a par 4 and the 12th is a 250yd downhill par 3, so its 6 in a row that could be 8, however both par 5s are more like long 4s at 489 and 469yds. Wonderfully quirky!

Cheers,

James

Yeah but Ballybunion still wins the title of best / highest ranked course with an unusual stretch (of 5 consecutive non par’4s).
