Golf in Dallas
« on: January 18, 2021, 12:16:29 AM »
I will be in Dallas for the next couple of weeks. I would be interested to know: a) what are the best public courses to play around the Dallas/Fort Worth area? and b) is anyone in the area interested in a game?

I've played Cedar Crest, which is a pretty good Tillinghast muni. People also like Stevens Park and Texas Rangers, iirc

What part of the area will you be staying.  It’s pretty large and traveling from one end of the metroplex to the other can be 90 minutes or more.

On the far north side of town, probably Trip Davis' Old American and Tribute up in the Colony.  A lower cost option might be Ridgeview Ranch, one of mine, off 121 but further up in Plano.  Not sure if Jay Morrish's Castle Hills is private or public.  Chase Oaks in Plano is also good (Von Hagge-Devlin)

Cowboys in Grapevine, one of mine, has won best public course about ten years running from Avid Golfer and is excellent in service and maintenance.

If mid cities, both Texas Rangers (North Arlington, John Colligan) and Texas Star (Euless, Kieth Foster, but only five miles or so from Rangers) are very good.

For the south, yes Cedar Crest (DA Weibring redo of a Tillie) is decent, as is Colligan's other renovation of Stevens Park (very short though)  Way south, in Cedar Hill, my Tangleridge is under rated and reasonably priced (although was once ranked the 47th best muni by Golf Week.)

There are probably many more that I am forgetting this morning but among the publics, those stand out to me.  Since you implied a stay in Dallas, I am leaving out many on the Ft. Worth Side.

You might not be aware but Jon once travelled by train from London to Prestwick, played a game of golf and then got the train back again, all in one day. I suspect therefore that a 90 minute drive wouldn't cause him too much concern  :)

Interesting, but DFW is probably one of the least train friendly cities in the world, steeped in auto (and pickup truck) culture.  Dallas does have it's DART system, but I am hard pressed to see many courses convenient to their stations, and it would require an Uber to the course.  Chicago had more than a few clubs located on rail lines, before autos were prevalent.

Short version, I have never taken a train to play golf in either of those cities, but I did once take a SF streetcar to Olympic, walking uphill to the drive and clubhouse.
