Consecutive Par Fours
« on: January 16, 2021, 05:37:43 PM »
What is the greatest number of consecutive par fours you've seen on a great golf course?

I'd be surprised if this has never been discussed here before, but I can't find it anywhere.

Biltmore Forest starts the backside with 5, squeezes in a par 3 on 15 before finishing with 3 straight 4’s.

Elie of course has 16 P4's, including two stretches of 7 straight.

If you're not limiting to modern definition pars as stated on the current scorecard, I'd think there would be interesting numerologies on a few older Japanese courses, including Kobe GC.

The Island started with eight par-4’s up until this year.

Elie finishes with seven par-4’s.

Depending on the routing used, RM composite has a heap.

I think the latest pres cup went 10W, 11W, 12W, 17W, 18W, 1E, 2E, 3E which I think made 8.

Fair to say no two are close to being alike.

Walter Travis' Lookout Point closes with 6 par 4's in a row, but it's not original. 15 and 16 were a par 5 back in Travis' day

It sounds like absolute heaven to me.
I wish I was a big shot in the world of golf course architecture, or at least a highly respected and well-travelled panelist who'd played 82 of the Top 100 in the world.
If so, I could make a powerful case for downgrading any course that had more than 2 Par 5s and 2 Par 3s, the stupidest and the most boring Pars in golf, respectively.
There is nothing good and grand and great in golf that can't be accomplished via the magnificent and multi-faceted Par 4, the absolute best Par and the very soul of the game.

Alas, given my actual status -- never mind.

This might not totally count, but if you tee off #10 at Inverness or Winged Foot West, as happens in tournaments, you'd play 7 in a row from #14 to #2.

If anybody did that at The Old Course, they'd play 8 in a row from #15 to #4. But I doubt that ever happens.

I'm hoping architects can respond: How many times have you routed more than three par fours in a row?

How about nine in a row?  I played Green Spring Valley Hunt Club just north of Baltimore in late October.  Hosted US Girl's Junior Championship in 1999.  Architects who have worked on this one include Tom Bendelow, Herb Strong, Robert Trent Jones Sr., and currently Tyler Rae.  Not great but a fun short course of 6623 yards.  Holes #7-15 are all par 4's  (#7 is very very good).  Never had seen nine in row before.

Second highly unusual feature...BOTH #1 and #18 are par 3's...anyone ever see that (excluding par 3 courses!)?

Lastly, this (although not architecturally related)...anyone ever play a club with four or more words in its name (excluding words "Club", "Golf", "Country", "The", "&", "Tennis", or "Beach")??  Otherwise Royal Lytham & Saint Annes Golf Club probably wins this sweepstakes!

It wouldn’t even cross my mind not to. If I ever get these new holes at Strandhill through planning, the resequenced course will have one stretch of 6 par-4’s in a row (4 to 9).

The course is Muirfield, the club is HCEG.  So Muirfield is the correct name for this thread anyway.
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Oadby Nr Leicester was until recently 18 holes. The front nine was all par 4 holes. So a run of 9. Sadly a NLE, but they have resurected the front 9 but it now has a couple of short holes.

Pacific Dunes is a great course that has 4 consecutive par 4s, no 6, 7, 8, and 9. But then only two par 4s on the back nine, no. 13 and no. 16.

Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club (Banks and L. George) in Virginia Beach is a par 69 and has 6 in a row, no. 12 to no. 17, and finishes with a par 3,
