« on: January 13, 2021, 03:10:44 PM »
Jeff?
Do you want to start?
If I go first I'll get banned. I might type something that might include   "...a master plan?"

Vaughn it is sad as a hawkeye alum. Yeah I can't understand who was advising the university in regards to this.

It is like you have a restaurant that hasn't made money for years.  The customers tell you the food needs to change and improve.  So you buy new tables and chairs, and renovate the booths.  Does it work????????

You are totally right in that no where in this announcement do they mention improving the actual product which is Finkbine golf course.  So they farmed out the operations to Troon which is a good company imo, but they have to know we ain't gonna make any money unless we can do what CRCC or Davenport CC did.

So frustrating and a shame for iowa city is a blooming city right now with constant development that needs a good track.  Unfortunately Finkbine ain't it.

We just hope they see the light eventually as in sure Troon will realize this sooner than their 5 year contract expires.

For anyone who has been there before or recently give an honest assessment of the course.  I haven't played there in years.

Kicking us when we are down!

May as well not have one as it isn't a product of like to play from all indicators.

It doesn’t look terrible on the Googles. What’s wrong with it?

It's not a terrible course!  It serves its purpose as a college course--open for play by students, alums and faculty.  Also the home to the university golf team--which has been a respectable team in the Big 10.  And, further, at least when I was growing up in Iowa, a place for State High School Championships, state Junior tournaments, etc.
Maybe the course doesn't inspire people with its originality or creative design. It's not meant for the person with an over-riding urge to travel to play it.  The holes are straightforward, somewhat challenging only because of length, with an ordinary look to it.
But it serves its purposes and is probably a Doak 5 or 6.  Let's be a little more charitable and open-minded.  Isn't the most important thing for any course--as for any business or other endeavor--to serve well the purpose of which it is created?  On that scale, it is a 9 or 10.

You really needed to look at Yale at the end of the 2019 season to see what Scott Ramsay had accomplished over his fifteen year tenure. The pictures circulating this past Summer were not indicative of same. I’m saddened that Scott moved on and his vision not fully realized.

Well, 18,000-22,000 rounds a year at $20-48 rack rate doesn't sound sustainable based on what little I know.  Maybe it's not the food it's the price.   Why not call in someone who knows how to make - or at least not lose - money?  Isn't a bigger issue spending $10 m on a clubhouse?

There’s quite a bit of daylight between “It’s not a terrible course” and “is probably a Doak 5 or 6”. Do others feel that it’s a 5 or 6?

Tim, I may be "home-towning" it a bit with a Doak 5 or 6--maybe 4 or 5 is better.  But it's certainly not below that.  It serves its purpose!!
