One of my favorites is here in the Metroplex - Golf Club of Dallas.  It's got that old timey feeling with small greens, generous fairways, and good conditioning.  Old, kind of dated club house that serves a good hamburger.  I've been told it was the last of Perry Maxwell's designs.
Was originally the Oak Cliff Country Club and hosted the Byron Nelson golf tournament in the 1950's.

Vancouver Golf Club is located, an excellent private course which has hosted several Canadian Womens' Opens, in the suburb of Coquitlam about 30 minutes down the freeway from Vancouver. The original site was on the shores Jericho Beach in Vancouver which was an amazing site.

While this isn't exactly a hot take, I do believe that most of the time the club named after the city is going to be at least pretty decent. They might not all be even the best course in town, but they usually don't suck.

I  was going to look at the same thing: large cities without no named club.  Some interesting history about Sacramento.  There were two Sacramento Country Clubs.  The first was open from 1902 to 1904 in the Oak Park section of the city.  After it closure, it re-opened on a site in East Sacramento in 1905.  Like its predecessor, that site was too small and closed in 1910.  Del Paso was opened by a group composed of many former SCC members, and the current location was occasionally referred to as the "new site" of the old club.  However, the name Del Paso was the only name that ever officially applied to the current location.

Interestingly, all of these at one point had a course named after the city.


Oakland GC - founded in 1897, NLE by 1905 - In addition, Lake Chabot was known as Oakland Municipal GC for a while.


Long Beach CC - founded in 1925, later known as Meadowlark CC - In addition, Recreation Park was once known as Long Beach Municipal GC.

Fresno - this is stretching things, but Riverside GC was also known as Riverside of Fresno GC.


Fort Worth CC - founded in 1903 and seemingly replace by Fort Worth G&CC in 1906.  River Crest CC was known as both Fort Worth GC and Fort Worth CC.  Also, Worth Hills was known as Fort Worth Municipal GC.


New York - there were a number of courses with New York in the name, including New York Athletic Club Links (Hunter's Island), New York CC (Bankville), New York GC (Great Neck), New York Military Academy GC (Cornwall on Hudson) and New York Municipal Course (City Island?).  In addition, there was the New York Newspaper GC which I believe played out of Van Cortlandt and the New York Athletic Club as an early name for what we know of as Winged Foot.
