How large is "good sized"? with more than 300,000 living in the metro area I'd imagine Augusta would fit good sized.

Augusta but not National.

Why not, you never said anything about the name having to include "Country Club" or "Golf Club". Is Augusta National not named after the city of Augusta, Georgia?

I agree with Drew about Toronto GC.  Hamilton is another one in Canada.

Of those listed, the top of my wish list would be San Francisco with LACC and Royal Melbourne right behind.

Am I the only one that marks Royal Melbourne down slightly (as compared to it's rankings) based on the composite structure? For me, this is driven by not knowing what holes I would play, or be able to recollect in any semblance of order.

The composite course is a sterner test but the west course might have more cool architecture.  I dont think you will have any dramas recollecting the holes on the composite course once you play there.

Like the other Canadians - Drew and Wayne - I'm a big fan of Toronto Golf Club from my one play.  After the restoration, will visit and play Hamilton also mentioned.

One that has not been mentioned HCEG or Muirfield.

There was a recent post about Best Golf Experiences and some one noted 18 holes, lunch and then 18 holes at Muirfield.

That was one was best two experiences to date.  The other 18 holes, lunch on the outdoor sofas and then 18 holes at Cabot Cliffs.  Given travel restrictions extending into the summer possible Cape Breton might be the golf destination this year.  Places like Bandon and St Patrick's might have to wait until 2022.

Davenport CC is one many have never played and is well worth the drive from Chicago. A hidden gem. CC of Detroit is a very well done course on a dead flat piece of ground

I agree on both accounts.

Finally got to play CC of Detroit a year and a half ago and was pleased with how good/fun it was (as you said a flat piece of property, and a lot of police activity constantly within earshot the day I was there) but a really good course.

I too consider Davenport CC well worth the drive even though I was coming from my parents house in SD so more than twice the distance but still well worth it!

Although in the case of Pine Valley I'm not sure the course was named for the town, I think it might have been the other way around.   Does not the small incorporated area called Pine Valley, NJ only exist because of the golf course?   I am sure someone on here probably knows when the village was incorporated and how that compares to the golf course being built.

HCEG is the name of the club.  The course is called Muirfield, so I don't think it counts.

Newcastle?  Royal Adelaide?

Difficult though, if asked to pick one, not to go with Royal Melbourne West
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Of the courses I have played, I think Baltimore CC and Philadelphia Cricket Club clearly stand out. But I also really enjoyed Minneapolis GC and Columbus CC (I have not played either since recent renovations/restorations, but from what I’ve heard both have only become better).

For smaller cities, Springfield CC in Ohio is my personal favorite. More than worth a visit for anyone in central Ohio.

  • Baltimore is in Lutherville
  • Philly Cricket is in Flourtown
  • Milwaukee is in River Hills
  • Boston is in Hingham
  • Royal Melbourne is in Black Rock
  • Chicago is in Wheaton
  • Austin GC is in Spicewood
  • Detroit is in Grosse Point Farms
etc....

I've been following this post with great interest.  I hope I don't offend its originator by suggesting a GCA ranking of these courses as follows:

I've created a list of 50 courses named after a good sized city.  By "good sized", I'm referring to a city population of 100K or a metro population of 150K, and the club's name needs to be part of the metro's common name.  These criteria leave out otherwise great candidates such as Garden City, Salem, Fairfield, etc.  Rather than try to rank them in order from 1-50, I suggest we break them down into top 10, second 10, third 10, fourth 10 and fifth ten.  So, assign a ranking of "1" to each of your top 10, "2" to each of your second 10, "3" to each of your third 10, "4" to each of your fourth ten and "5" to each of your fifth ten.  I'm sure I've left off worthy candidates, but I've tried to assemble a list that includes known greatness as well as architectural and geographic diversity.

The course are:

Atlanta AC (Highlands)
Atlantic City
Augusta CC
Augusta National
Austin CC
Baltimore (East)
Boston
Buffalo
CC Birmingham (West)
CC Charleston
CC Detroit
CC Little Rock
Cedar Rapids
Chattanooga
Charlotte
Chicago
Columbus (OH)
Dallas National
Davenport
Denver
Des Moines (South)
Eugene
Fargo
GC Austin
Greenville (Chanticleer)
Kansas City
Lancaster
Los Angeles (North)
Milwaukee
Minneapolis
Oklahoma City
Omaha
Philadelphia CC
Philadelphia Cricket
Phoenix
Pittsburgh Field
Portland (ME)
Portland (OR)
San Diego
San Francisco
Scranton
Seattle
South Bend
St. Louis
Tacoma
Texarkana
Waterbury
Wilmington (South)
Worcester
York

Although, related to Ben's post above, Atlanta Country Club is located in Marietta (and Marietta Country Club is located Kennesaw, lol)
