What’s your favorite course named after a good sized city?
« on: January 13, 2021, 09:02:39 AM »
I’m looking at some photos of Milwaukee CC. LA is strong. Philly is strong. I hear good things about Buffalo.

What’s your favorite?

I originally said best but changed it.

Since I’m here in Philadelphia I will say that Philly CC certainly makes us proud. It’s a top Flynn, our adopted Philadelphian, that sits above the Schuylkill River and has that Flynn trait of using gently rolling hills in the best of ways.

How large is "good sized"? with more than 300,000 living in the metro area I'd imagine Augusta would fit good sized.

Why not, you never said anything about the name having to include "Country Club" or "Golf Club". Is Augusta National not named after the city of Augusta, Georgia?

Favorite is Minneapolis Golf Club (former home).

The best would be Chicago Golf and LACC. Haven’t played SFGC.

I have often thought that clubs named after the cities they inhabit tend to be very good, especially private courses. SFGC and LACC are two favorites, but I would include Pittsburgh Field CLub, Baltimore CC, and Philly Cricket. One that I want to play is Scranton.

Not my favorite but add it to the list:

Of the ones I’ve seen, I’d put here nearer the top

LA
SF
Philly
Milwaukee
ST. Louis
Eugene

Pittsburgh Field Club is good but a bit down the list as are OKCC, Portland and Seattle.

San Jose, where my parents were members is quite a bit further down, but still good.

We have two pretty good ones here in Austin, though they wouldn't rank at the very top like some of the others already mentioned here.

In order, the best in GB&I (off the top of my head):

Royal Aberdeen
Royal Liverpool
Royal Dublin
Glasgow GC (Gailes)

Can’t think of too many more that are top tier (or close) in big enough cities.

Belfast and Manchester are two that almost make it.

Well then Augusta CC. Georgia not Maine.

I'll always be fond of Hartford Golf Club, having caddied there a bit.

I really enjoyed CC of Mobile and Pensacola CC when I played them two Mays ago.

Ft. Myers Country Club, in a city of about 90,000, is public. Are there any public courses whose namesake city is 100k+ population, with no private club with the name in it (e.g. Charleston Muni doesn't count because of the existence of CC of Charleston)?

I like the simple approach of simply naming a golf course after the town/city/county where it's located. Frou-frou golf course names are almost never an improvement over simplicity.

Davenport CC is one many have never played and is well worth the drive from Chicago. A hidden gem. CC of Detroit is a very well done course on a dead flat piece of ground

Huntington CC-population 199,000
CC of Charleston-population 139,000

You could have another thread with clubs that are in different cities than their name implies i.e. New Haven CC(Hamden), CC of Scranton(Clark’s Summit), Plainfield CC(Edison) as examples.
