New 2022 PGA Venue
« on: January 10, 2021, 07:09:11 PM »
It seems based on reporting from Eamon Lynch and Geoff Shackelford that the 2022 PGA will not happen at Trump Bedminster as a result of recent events.

That begs the question: What are your "dream venues" (that could actually host it...no Myopia Hunt or Sand Hills)?

I think the realistic options are Baltusrol (supposed to be 2029), Southern Hills (supposed to be 2030), Congressional (Supposed to be 2031), Inverness, or Oakland Hills (I realize these are all recent Hanse or Green renovations...). Riviera could be fun too but seems less likely. Any other ideas?

I’ve only played the Blue but could they field a PGA at Streamsong? With the move to May I thought the were going to look for more southern venues.

I’d suspect Southern Hills, although it might be nice if Harding Park got to try again with fans and whatnot. PGA friend suggests moving Valhalla from ‘24 to ‘22 and then finding a site for ‘24, maybe Frisco by then?

Shipnuck just tweeted that Southern Hills and Liberty National are top contenders and Shoal Creek is making a push. Baltusrol was asked and declined.

Please not Liberty National...

I bet Whistling Straights could take it with short notice.

I highly doubt it. There's no easy way to get fans to and from the resort other than long shuttle rides from somewhere around Tampa.

What about Pine Valley?  It's in NJ and a great course. Just looked at the scorecard and it's over 7000 from the back. The world should see this course.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Actually as long as there are no crowds maybe they should play something at PV.

If there are no crowds for the 22 PGA will will have bigger problems than what golf course to play on.

While an understandable decision, a sad day for the great golf staff at Trump Bedminster. I would hope they could find a venue in the NJ/Philly area. Mountain Ridge? They get a trial run on the logistics when they host a LPGA event in 2021.

Liberty National - ehh

If there are no or limited crowds permitted (separate issue) and a NJ venue  Bayonne GC would work well.......

While the staff might be great it’s a service model that requires $$$ in tips to get to the first tee. There is nobody that doesn’t get greased on your way in or out. I say this as someone who is completely comfortable with and used to cash tips as a service model. My pal asked me if he should hit the mailman with $20 who happened to be by the valet area? I told him that even though Christmas was six months away it would be a nice tribute. :)

Liberty National feels undersized for the revenue requirements of a men’s major for any association.

Batusrol seems like a good fit to honor any existing local sponsor commitments.  However the members there are enduring reduced availability of their golf courses due to restoration work the past few seasons, so adding 2021 PGA might be a tough sell right now.

Ha, that's like saying Kohler is undersized.  The amount of cash in the owner's bank account can be part of the equation.

I expect Philadelphia Cricket to throw their hat in the ring. Hosted the PGA National Club Pro Championship a few years ago and the Sr Players.

Plenty of options really, so I'm guessing cash will play more than a small role...

The PGA is going to use the Ryder Cup model and take the highest offer.  Liberty National with Paul Fireman's checkbook would be the favorite.

The PGA is probably seeing this as a windfall but I suspect that Trump will sue the PGA so some type of settlement would cost the PGA a few million.

While I believe MPGC has shown it can hold up to the worlds best, and its a big venue with infrastructure in place...if the PGA ever comes to TX I believe it will be at the new courses in Frisco which the PGA owns (or is a partner in some manner).

I think (actually hope) that Trump will have plenty of other more pressing legal issues to fight other than this.

I would imagine that the contract had a clause that allowed the PGA "an out" for situations like...well...the owner of the club inciting an insurrection that led to 1) violence 2) murder 3) domestic terrorism.

Kinda bad for the brand...;p-)
