Is there a deadline when the organizers need to know who's in or out?

I just received a note from a club in Scotland stating that it might not be until September when the restrictions are relaxed.  Coupled with the requirement for wearing a mask at the airports and during the flights as well as Covid testing upon arrival without regard to vaccine status, I am becoming pessimistic.

My wife is flying into Heathrow on Tuesday morning. I'm taking the train down from Edinburgh to meet her at the airport. We are spending one night in London, then taking the train on Wednesday to North Berwick where she will "quarantine," and take her required Day 2 and Day 8 COVID tests. (You must be allowed to travel to your place of residence.) Do we have to wear a mask while traveling... yes. Is it really an issue or a problem for either of us... no. Travel today is more complicated than it used to be. You have to do more pre-planning and jump through some hoops by taking tests and wearing masks. But, if you are fully vaccinated and take proper precautions, travel can be done very safely and without too many hassles. Once you get here all the hoop jumping is worth it.

The Buda isn't until September. I think a good number of the current restrictions will be lifted by then and you guys will be able to travel over here without some of the hardships currently imposed. Be a bit more patient. Things may turn in your favor before too long. There is supposed to be another big announcement on July 19. Fingers crossed.

I'm trying to stay hopeful and will wait until 30 days before BUDA to make a final call. Under current conditions I wouldn't go but hopeful it will change.

Channeling Mr. Whitaker as my spirit animal, I'm going to hang on until the 19th of July or a little later before pulling the plug on my hopes of making it to Scotland and onto the BUDA.

I am going barring Armagedden.
But please splain something to me youse guys on the ground.
If quarantine and restrictions are and will  be such a big deal how are Ricky Fowler and all the other INTL players able to compete in the British Open yet us worthy pilgrims cannot expect to have reasonable measures with which to deal? What about quarantine cause I just dont see all these going arriving two weeks early and sitting around watching Brit soap operas all day? If 32,000 fans are allowed to pack R St Georges, and we all know how unroomy links (ie tight) tracks, are how can we be denied individual travel to wide open venues? The fears expressed just dont seem justifiable!

Wardo - the pros get an exemption from quarantine due to the professional nature of their travel. We, the great unwashed, have to adhere to the travel restrictions.

Call me on FaceTime Audio (if you have an iPhone) or Google Duo Audio (if you have an Android) and I’ll give you a first hand account of how all this travel stuff really works.

Ward,

Their country, their rules.

I'm a light sleeper going east, so I read a lot on the 7-9 hours in the air.  Having to wear a mask which fogs my readers is as bad as getting a swab pushed up my nose.

Ironic how these folks here and there who always crow about "the science" don't seem to accept the ample data on the effectiveness of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.  I would gladly wear a government issued certificate around my neck for the sole benefit of the fearful.  Alas, that and most everything else do not seem to be enough.

I so want to go, but the distinct impression is that "they" prefer we stay home.

Ward you’ve clearly never been to Royal St George’s the course is around 350 acres and they’ve over 100 acres outside of the course footprint.

Michael - surely quarantine would start when you enter the London hotel? I cannot see you would be permitted to use public transport the following day. If you give the Edinburgh address for quarantine and the inspectors arrive that evening or the following morning before you arrive you’d be in breach of the quarantine regulations.

Mark - I don’t think I said we were staying in a hotel in London. Thanks for your concern, but I’ve discussed everything with the authorities and our schedule is totally acceptable. You see, they allow travel to your residence if you do so safely. Otherwise, my wife would be stuck in London for four days. It doesn’t work that way unless you are coming from a Red List country.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-05/scotland-tops-europe-s-covid-hotspots-as-delta-infections-surge

"Scotland is recording the highest rates of coronavirus cases in Europe a little over a month before the government plans to lift most restrictions on society and the economy.

The regions covering the cities of Dundee and Edinburgh were top of the World Health Organization’s latest heat map, the BBC reported, as the delta variant rips through the country. Scotland last week reported daily infections exceeding 4,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic."

That's what happens when you let Mike Whitaker into the country  ;D

Joking aside, three of my friends have caught it in the last week and another friend is self-isolating because his son has it. I should add none of them are hospitalised and at least two appear to have been asymptomatic. It does occur to me that the reason in the rises in cases being reported is because the testing for COVID is now being ramped up. I think a truer reflection on whether there has been an actual increase in cases would be whether there has been more people ending up in hospital because of it. In saying that, I've no medical degree.

Dr. Fauci said on Sunday’s Meet The Press television show that 99.2%(+\-) of all new COVID related hospitalizations are with the unvaccinated. If that’s not enough incentive for someone to get their shots I’m not sure what will do it.

By the way Niall, can’t blame me… I haven’t been to Edinburgh or Dundee yet.  ;)   Probably all the folks out gathering to watch the Scotland football. Just sayin’.

It couldn't have been the football. Scotland weren't in the tournament long enough for it to make a difference.

I agree with your sentiment about everyone getting the jab unless medically advised not to. It's selfish not to.

Not Scotland, quite, but I and one of my sons both had it recently.  He was unvaccinated and was definitely worse than I was.  For me (2 jabs but ill within a week of second jab) I hade mild symptoms for a week, though still have the cough and have been told the cough will last weeks after you no longer have the virus.  Our government appears to have given up the ghost trying to deal with the virus and is going to let it rip through the population and hope that the vaccination scheme has done enough to prevent crisis levels of hospitalisation.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Mike for the record would you like to clarify where you and Nancy did spend the night in London.

You then say you took the train from London  to  North Berwick. How did the pair of you avoid going into Waverley Station in the centre of Edinburgh to get the local train to North Berwick?

We’ve booked The Queen’s Head from Saturday until Wednesday. Seems like a decent location.
We’re also currently looking at purchasing a wheeled gin palace (mobile home). If we go ‘down that road’ are there any decent camping places we could park at?

If you haven't purchased your airline ticket yet the prices can be very reasonable.  I decided to treat myself and was able to get a roundtrip from Raleigh, NC to Edinburgh in business class on United for $2132 - premium economy was more.
