Welcome aboard James!

Still room for a few more. I’m well aware that there are always a few drop-outs so I’m very relaxed about taking deposits from more than 36 people.

There are always a few who only want to play 18 holes a day so we can actually accommodate more than 36 anyway. I’ll be doing a spreadsheet of those who only want to play 18 on the Sunday or Monday or who will not be around for all 3 days.

If this is you please let me know.

On the assumption that spots are still available, I just sent my deposit.  Looking forward to what will be my first BUDA.

You’re welcome Mike!

I’ve just got all fingers and toes crossed now that international flights will have returned to something like normal by early September.

It’s shaping up to be a great few days! 👍

We are coming a day early so added Swinley Forest at 1100 on 8/31. We are three. I imagine one more could be addded.

Mayday - you need to start another thread and detail your itinerary (with costs) showing availability for extra players. It's too difficult to piece this together from your various posts.

I hope you guys have lots of travel insurance in place, cos I’m not at all convinced you’re coming here anytime this year. I can’t tell you how much I hope to be proved wrong.

Marty - I got an email from Deal this week detailing their plan for coming out of lockdown... which is obviously based on government guidelines. According to their PLAN everything at the club will be open without restriction by 17 June. Obviously, this is barring a setback of some kind with the virus. New cases are down 90% in the UK from January highs. One has to think that these numbers will improve even more as additional vaccine jabs are administered.

I’m sure that clubs will be fully open by the summer. Marty’s fear (and one I share) is that our government will basically close the borders for another 12 months.

The U.K. is doing very well in terms of vaccination and reducing infections. The big worry however, is the importation of new variants against which current vaccines may not be as effective.

Scientists are all over the media at the moment urging no incoming or outgoing foreign travel at all until next year. This argument is definitely gaining traction with both the government and the public.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

I suspect the economic case for closing the borders might be as strong as the health one.  The U.K. had a deficit on international tourism in 2019 of £34 billion! Keeping that money at home and flowing repeatedly through the economy has got to be a tempting prospect for the government!

https://www.airportwatch.org.uk/2020/05/uk-had-a-tourism-deficit-of-33-9-billion-in-2019-with-88-of-that-ie-about-29-8-billion-due-to-air-travel/

Well met and hale fellow pests,
I have resumed planning disrupted for a year. I have in mind playing the English courses( myself or at most another travel companion) near London such as Sunningdale, Allwoody, St Georg, etc. i have my list and have sorted days of play etc.

Can anyone tell me if these kinds of courses have resumed responding to visitor requests or do I need to keep my powder dry a while longer? Thx

I don't know the answer but I suspect they will be very glad to hear from you. Just one thing, Alwoodley is in Leeds not London. I look forward to seeing you later in the year.

Sounds Like a very nice warm up for the main event and if I could manage it I'd join you. Alas the working week is likely to get in the way.

Just a thought, has anyone looked at the accommodation for BUDA ? It occurs to me with an upsurge in stay at home vacations that booking accommodation might not be as straight forward as previous years.

You must be reading my mind Niall!

Buxton has many hotels and guest houses and, being a compact town, all are within walking distance of Cavendish.

The biggest hotel is the Palace, an imposing presence above the town by the railway station. Its former glory is a little faded these days, and it is owned by the notorious Britannia group, but by all accounts it offers decent accommodation at reasonable prices.

The newest and poshest hotel in town is The Crescent, housed in the magnificent Georgian  edifice of the same name, which has just undergone a multi million pound restoration project.

Nearby is The Old Hall Hotel, reputedly the oldest in England and which counts Mary Queen of Scots among its former guests. Very nice but a little pricey.

Close to Cavendish is the Lee Wood, a member of the Great Western group and probably the best all round bet for Pests.

Also very close to the club is the Portland Hotel, which is a little more basic but perfectly acceptable at very competitive prices.

The Westminster Hotel is in a lovely spot overlooking the Pavilion Gardens and looks to offer seriously good value.

My hope is that the golf club itself becomes the social hub of the event and any of the hotels mentioned are but an easy drunken stagger away!

My advice is to go on Booking.com and choose somewhere that offers free cancellation and no commitment. While it looks like we have light at the end of the tunnel we still live in uncertain times.

Talk of cryptic. I almost booked Roseliegh House, nice little property and companionship, but noticed that the available rooms are labeled as "39 steps".

Not only do i not intend to do a walkup of that stature but I also have no wish to invite the kind of "dashing about the countryside" seminal to the classic mystery of the same name

A good choice Robin. It’s in a beautiful location overlooking the Pavilion Gardens and is either an easy stroll or a 3 minute drive from the golf club.

I’m setting up a WhatsApp group for this year’s BUDA participants. This will enable easier communication than posting everything on here.

Please send me a message on (0)7720 285376 and I’ll add you to the group.

International code for the U.K. is 44. Miss off the (0) if messaging from overseas.
