Foursomes at Reddish Vale will lighten the load and if we swap holes after lunch everyone will play every tee shot.
Are we playing foursomes both rounds at RV?  Does that mean we have to keep the same pairings?

I thought that was one of the main points point of foursomes. 18 in the morning and then swap holes in the afternoon.

I guess there’s no reason why pairings can’t change for the afternoon round so long as everyone gets to tee off at every hole.

The alternative of course, is greensomes. That would work.

Being an 18 holer, especially on travel days, I like the alternative of AM Greensomes. I don't think there will be anything to gain by trying to force 4somes at a non 2ball club. There will likely be a ton of standing around.

Duncan,

The usual BUDA format is, on the 36 hole days, to play one round of 4ball and one of 4somes.  This gives everyone (especially the 18 holers) the chance to play the course and a quicker round as well for the 36 holers.  I for one, and much as I enjoy foursomes, would like to play my own ball for 18 holes at a course I have never seen before and I suspect others will feel similarly.

And one of the best things about the best BUDAs is playing with a number of different partners/opponents.  Anything that makes mixing the pairings up even a little harder should be avoided.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Yep it works for Ryder Cup, 4BBB am and 4somes pm, and me😎

Greensomes acceptable alternative to 4BBB on one day.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Okay, I’m swayed.

We’ll do the Ryder Cup format with 4BBB in the morning and Foursomes/Greensomes in the afternoon at both Cavendish and Reddish Vale.

Both courses have five par 3s and the quirk that four of them are played by the same player in foursomes - odd numbers at Cavendish and even numbers at Reddish Vale.

For this reason I suggest Greensomes.

Everyone playing the 4somes/greensomes will have played all the holes themselves in the morning.  For my part (and others may disagree) greensomes is a halfway house with less of the advantages of foursomes (it's not as quick, doesn't allow walking ahead, doesn't have the same importance on each shat as 4somes) and without the advantage of 4ball.  I'd much prefer 4somes.  There's lots of foursomes played at Elie, where the only two par 3s are both odd numbers and no-one ever complains that they didn't get to hit a tee shot on a par 3.....

Interesting.  I much prefer Greensomes. Its a far more tactical game than 4somes. If you aren't at a 2ball club the risk of standing around waiting to hit shots is too high playing 4somes.

Given this is an event where a large part of the enjoyment comes from meeting people you've either never met before or have only met previously at BUDA then I favour Greensomes over Foursomes as it allows the four to mingle more than you might in a foursomes game.

The other aspect to BUDA is to enjoy the courses and there is no doubt in my mind that you enjoy and appreciate a course more if you actually play it rather than standing half way down a fairway waiting for a ball to arrive for your turn to hit. That said, I shall simply do as I'm told by my Captain, whoever that may be !

I recall a Greensomes match at Perranporth in which James Boon and I squared up against Lynne Shackleford and Wardo ( i think). It was a superb match and was halved on 18. I really enjoyed the tactics of whose drive to choose and the likelihood of the other guy being best to take on the approach. It was more involving with my partner than straightforward alternate shots. I'd like to suggest that, in the case of playing Greensomes, that we mandate having to take a minimum number of drives from each player (say 6 each) to further enhance the strategic thought.

Man that was a match; pretty fair breeze up and roaming over the bright side of the moon. Di recall that you all stormed back to halve?

I'd expect nothing less.

Sadly whilst the stitches have come out of my face this afternoon, the finger is behind schedule and I'm less optimistic that I'm going to be fit than I was.  I'd guess my chances of playing at all are significantly less than 50%

Decided this morning that the two Jacks and I must cancel. One had a mild heart attack last week (Weiner) and the other hasn’t gotten his passport. Weiner is in better shape now because of two stents but not having Branyan was the last straw.

We will reschedule our deferred rounds to next year.

I’m very disappointed but now get to see The Forme Tour play my home course.

He’s heartbroken.  Did I say that?  He’s actually better than he was before but he has daughters who are concerned.

He will return.

We’ve booked The Queen’s Head from Saturday until Wednesday. Seems like a decent location.
We’re also currently looking at purchasing a wheeled gin palace (mobile home). If we go ‘down that road’ are there any decent camping places we could park at?
F.

EDIT: Now booked at the Kingscroft Guest House. Olde worlde Edwardian charm galore!

Just discovered our choice of accoms is veggie/vegan, but you know what? In the spirit of new experiences and trying hard not to be a couple of old gits, we’re not changing. The menus look fresh and tasty, lots of fruit (good for my colon!), only veggie sausages for brekkies, but worth a try!
Can always get our carnivorous tendencies satisfied at the golf clubs. Golfers’ menus are usually full of meaty treats!

Re: Saturday 4th September - late afternoon game on the original MacKenzie sequence of holes at Cavendish

As a warm-up to Buda proper, I have arranged for Pests to have the rare opportunity to play Cavendish in the hole order that MacKenzie intended. The sequence was changed by the club very early on - the scores recorded by the professionals in the match on the official opening day suggest that the current sequence was in play even then. MacKenzie does not appear to have been in attendance.

I have the tee booked from 3pm.

So far I have as definites;

Sean Arble
Tony Muldoon
Enno Gerdes
Conrad Gamble
Giles Payne
Ken Moodie
Duncan Cheslett
Jayne Cheslett

We've plenty of room for more. A full menu will be available in the clubhouse afterwards.

Let me know if you want to join the fun.

Robin - You're now on the list! Unfortunately Boony contacted me the other day protesting that work commitments made his participation on Saturday doubtful to impossible. Hopefully he'll see sense and turn up!  ;D
