There are a lot of people in the 1% who can't afford an $18M house!

Great article in Philadelphia Inquirer.  Those right at the top 1% breaking point in US have a net worth of $17.5mm and home equity of $1.2mm, most of their net worth is tied up in their businesses.

To make the top 1% you need income of $539,000. Not even close $18.5. Maybe the top .1%? I guess the question is 1% of wealth or 1% in annual earnings.

It is total assets, not yearly earnings. Many of the top 1% have a very low salary (comparatively) and take their compensation in stock, bonuses, options etc. So the yearly salary wouldn’t be noteworthy, but the compensation that adds to their total wealth is. I’ll never be in that demographic, so I don’t really care as there ar a lot of ways in which to be compensated and money is just one.

No offence, but I'm taking my $18 million to Weybridge to buy one of the original 1920s Tarrant homes and play St George's Hill instead.

Well you had better hurry up then, there aren't that many original Tarrant homes left on the estate now. Though they won't cost you that much, they tend to be bought for land value and pulled down immediately.

The ones that remain look tiny next to the mansions that replaced them, when lots of the original Tarrant homes were knocked down in the mid 2000s to make way for much larger more modern homes

I'll take this one for a summer escape from the relentless heat in Phoenix plus it's in Clear Creek on Lake Tahoe, NV. It's only 6.885M

It would be hard to find a golf development in the mountains out west that isn’t moving a lot of product in the last year. Covid boom. There are several doing numbers even better than Clear Creek.
