Fort Augustus - Colt ?
« on: January 03, 2021, 11:09:43 AM »
On another thread Clyde mentioned that the nine hole Fort Augustus course had been designed by Colt. I'd be interested to hear some more about how that came about as it seems unusual that Colt would agree to drag himself up to the highlands to design a modest (?) nine holer, particularly as at that time I believe he tended to push instructions in the far north to MacKenzie.

If anyone knows the story or has played the course I'd be pleased to hear more.

That's how every interest search I have seen seems to credit the design, but no idea of the source(s) for that!?

The routing/landforms of the 8th are strikingly similar to the 6th at Sunningdale New, in mirror...

It doesn’t seem to exist anymore unfortunately but there was once a splendid website called ‘Golfarchitecturepictures’ run by Frank Pont I believe that showcased dozens of photos of FAGC (and many other courses too). And rather fine FAGC looked too. Seemingly no great length but a bunch of heathery interest and grazed by sheep!

Braid biographer John Moreton investigated the history of Fort Augustus and wrote it up in 'Through the Green' in September 2002.

His article can be found on page 24 of the magazine, at this link: http://www.golfcollectors.co.uk/u/cms/TTG_62_2002September.pdf

My supposition, given that the 'client' was a Benedictine monk from Fort Augustus Abbey, is that Colt became aware of the desire to build a new course through the Catholic contacts of his wife Laura. Harry and Laura moved to East Hendred in west Berkshire in 1917; the village was a hotbed of Catholicism, because the lords of the manor for 600 years, the Eyston family, had always remained Catholic. Laura's father David Dewar was an Anglican priest who went over to Rome after (now Saint) John Henry Newman had done so. The family was quite grand, and was very well connected in upper-class Catholic circles.

Excellent stuff. Judging from Moreton's Braid book he didn't find any later work from Braid ?! I also note that Moreton concluded that the course now (2002) was different to that described by Colt in his report. Any thoughts on that ?

Doesn’t seem to exist anymore. Shame as the content was good. If Frank still tunes in here I wonder if it could be re-instigated?
