Job Description
« on: December 09, 2020, 11:35:24 PM »
I borrowed this off another golf web site today.  What golf job do you think he's describing?

“I would say one of the most important skill sets going forward will be the ability to strategically think through the continually changing revenue landscape going forward,” [redacted] said. “We’re going to need somebody who understands how the landscape is changing from a revenue and a business standpoint, because at the end of the day, it’s [redacted].
I had to redact who is in charge of the hiring, because you might recognize the name, and I had to redact the latter because it gave me whiplash.  Once someone guesses correctly I will fill in the blank.

Yes, if you want, you can probably Google it, but if you're going to do that then enjoy the answer privately until someone guesses it.  Peter's guess was incorrect, but close!

Oh, geez -- so it's come to this, huh? I didn't think the end would come so soon. That string of clichés makes me long for the Tower of Babel, and for a quick death and sudden end to all my sufferings. It's now the description of *every* job in the 21st century, and thus for *no* job at all -- at least not one worthy of the name. And to make the pain even more acute, I'm fearing that it's actually an ad for the in-house golf course architect!

By the number of "going forwards" in the quote, it must be for a big corporate job in golf (since you posted it here). R&A, US or European tour or equivalent? The language could apply to F1, football, rugby or the ACME Widget company etc. It's for a boss with business experience rather than someone with a passion for and knowledge of the sport.

Its either for the head of the USGA or the manager of the half way house at a club that does not yet have a signature hotdog/burger/taco/sandwich.

It would be nice to find out it was written in jest or as satire but my fear is it wasn’t.

Let's give it to David Elvins.

Here is the full quote:

“I would say one of the most important skill sets going forward will be the ability to strategically think through the continually changing revenue landscape going forward,” Francis said. “We’re going to need somebody who understands how the landscape is changing from a revenue and a business standpoint, because at the end of the day, it’s a nonprofit organization."

Stu Francis is the current president of the USGA, and head of the search committee for Mike Davis' replacement as CEO.  Good to know they have their priorities in order so that they will be sure to find the right man for the job.

That last line might bring back the ghost of Frank Hannigan to haunt them for Christmas.

OK...so a $250M organization with $500M in assets should not look for a CEO with a focus on revenue???

I'm guessing both Mike Davis and his role in golf course setup, and the overall lack of movement on rolling back equipment, are the real targets here because nothing Francis says can be argued.

I still think they need to think outside of the box and understand the new paradigm.  Stating that they need excellent communication skills to continually and effectively connect with a broad and growing constituency of stakeholders would be redundant.

Forgive me for being old enough to remember a day that Revenue was not the USGA's primary focus - or should I say motivation?

I think the better question is, why does an organization with $500M in assets need to focus on revenue? Perhaps the focus should be ROA (return on assets)? Or are they building a legal death star to take on the manufacturers? If you told me that were so, I just flat wouldn't believe you.
