Old American Golf, Texas
« on: December 04, 2020, 01:03:47 PM »
I am liking the look of the Tripp Davis designed Tribute Golf Links (wrong! :) ), where the LPGA is playing this week. I don't recall any recent discussions about the course. Anyone played it?

I played it only once, six years ago. I liked it. I thought it had a more authentic feel and played more like a links than other faux links e.g. Grand Cypress New in Orlando and Royal Links in Las Vegas. It had a lot of width, rumpled fairways and wind and played pretty firm. You could play a lot of interesting chip shots and use a "Texas wedge". There were some fun novelty touches such as the tee shot of number 17 which is based on #17 at the Old Course and a replica swilcan bridge . If I remember correctly, #1, #17 and #18 were based on TOC. Others were based on holes at Nairn, Moray, Prestwick, Carnoustie, Muirfield, Turnberry Ailsa, Troon and Western Gailes. The exterior of the clubhouse looked a bit like Muirfield. Here's a link to a photo album ,https://www.flickr.com/photos/golfcoursepix/albums/72157644200259637

The LPGA is playing a replica course? That's odd

They are not playing at the Tribute but at the Old American Golf Club which is next to the Tribute.  Old American is a Tripp Davis course that is quite good but can be quite difficult because of the severity of some of the greens.

I believe the courses came back under the same owner recently and the place is called the Golf Clubs at the Tribute.   They are playing at Old American.

My mistake! Thanks for the correction. But I still like the look of the course they are playing, which is also a Tripp Davis design.

I am big fan of Old American.  Playable tee to green but green complexes impose sever demands on iron play and short game.

I played it about 7 years ago, my hole by hole review with photos is here:

I remember really liking it and reading over what I wrote back then, it made quite the impression.

I've enjoyed watching the tourney thus far.

I enjoy them both.  Old American does have a classic feel and demanding greens for both approaches and putting (as Jason mentioned) and the Tribute does use classic templates.  The Tribute fairways are wider and the course less demanding.  It’s a lot of fun.  The two together are a great pair.

Yeah it's definitely a course that gets your attention when you see it on TV. Just not a normal tour golf look. The play from the ladies seemed to echo the idea that it's a "2nd shot golf course." Lots of bunker shots, chips, and pitches featured.

Justin Leonard has a co-design credit, I wonder what his contribution was. He seems like a tour pro that might be good at the actual design stuff. Thoughtful, detail-oriented, etc.
Don't play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty.

Have they painted it green? I think those are Bermuda greens. I played the Tribute once and the lake has a little feel of the firth. A few replicas were pretty good. It is so cold here I can’t believe they survived Thursday. A little better now but will only get to 60. You can’t trust winter here because the day the front shows up is miserable.

Really enjoying seeing the course as well as the appropo "Scottish" weather conditions.

Perhaps it's just an age thing but I can so much more relate to the games the ladies play these days than the men's tour.

Watching a bit of coverage, and also pleasantly surprised for a course I've never heard of.  Looks terrific and with 2 courses perhaps a destination for the midwest mashie or dixie cup?

P.S.  These two holes looks very familiar, can't quite place it!   ;D

I was told by our knowledgeable bartender this afternoon that the fairways and greens at OA were painted.  I played Thursday morning a bit further north and, in comparison to many of my rounds in the UK, it was good golfing weather.  Friday through today was outright pleasant.

Old American is 10 minutes from my house and where I could very well end up if things don't go well at my home club.  I've played it many times in all types of weather and it is hard as nails.  A scratch at OA can play anywhere.

The women are playing the course so short that it may look highly playable.  But if we held a gca.com event there from the third set of tees, it could very well surpass the 5.5 hour Saturday afternoon fiasco at Barona Creek in the KP1.

I am told that Justin Leonard was intimately involved in the design of the course.  Having a decent understanding of Tripp Davis's work, this one seems to require an extra amount of precision and discipline.  I can see how Justin in his heyday could have had a competitive advantage here.

The Dallas Morning News has OA 49th in the state.  I think it is better than that, but with four of the five par threes routed S,SE, SW with the lake in sight but not closely in play and a couple head-scratchers among the par 4s, I can see why it is not more highly regarded.  From my standpoint, not being a reasonable walk is its biggest shortcoming, but golf in Texas is mostly a riding game.
