Horses for Courses
« on: November 25, 2020, 06:37:25 PM »
Fried Egg just did a podcast on Data Golf. It's an Econ Phd student and his brother that looks at course data and strokes gained stats to find out stuff about what courses favor what PGA Tour players and such. Very interesting website and podcast.

I played with Will of DataGolf in October at Westwood Plateau in Vancouver. Nice guy and I liked what he had to say. Good player, too

High compliments.

I do not usually have the patience to listen to podcasts, but I listened to all of that, and spent the last half of it playing around with their "course fit" model while listening.  They are onto something there.  I have a couple of ideas of things they are missing in their model, but they are definitely chasing it down.

I wonder how big of a sample they need for Memorial Park to be in the Fit Tool. This year plus next year? Or is one tournament enough?

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "horses for courses" is Lanny Wadkins choosing Curtis Strange as a captain's pick in the 1995 Ryder Cup, because he won the US Open there six years earlier, and then didn't win again on tour.

The data will obviously be better after 2-3 events, but they will do calculations for Memorial Park at year-end.

Matt did point me toward another feature of the site, though, called "Historical Event Data," which covers this year's event at Memorial Park . . . you just have to click the tab for the "2021" event since it was part of the 2021 FedEx Cup race.  He noted that the profile shows that 26% of the scoring profile for Memorial Park was for Strokes Gained Around the Green.

That's the highest % in that category of any course played on Tour since 2010.  :D
