Another related aspect to consider ..... winter tee positioning.
Played quite a few holes over the years where a particular hole was better, more interesting, more challenging etc, from a differently positioned winter tee than when played from the usual main season tee location.

Would that the climate in Chicago made for play even with temporary greens

We might have 20 foursomes for a 3-club Scramble at Beverly on Saturday. Pandemic golf continues.

Full field (two foursomes on every hole) for Black Friday 2-man at Cog Hill yesterday. Chilly without cart covers and heaters! Two man, 3 club at Cog next Saturday as well, followed by 4-man scramble on 14th at Waters Edge.

“Temporaries” are primarily a function of private clubs as you won’t get many players willing to pay a daily fee if the actual greens are closed. In southern New England we are very near the end of the season although some clubs will close their greens and install “temporaries” in an effort to extend things for those that are interested. Despite my affliction for the game temporary greens have never interested me and I segue to regular walking for exercise. What say you?

All I can say is that I found temporary greens at Chambers to be excellent. Great green sites with great contours. Actually better than actual greens set against the eastern slope that wouldn't grow grass properly.

Don' get me wrong; I have played on many thanksgivings to regular greens and we played this weekend.  But not many courses in Chicago are open even with temporaries in mid-December through February.
