Lansdown Near Bath
« on: November 14, 2020, 09:41:40 AM »
I have been listening to one of Peter Lovesey's Peter Diamond mysteries and the Lansdown area near or in Bath figures prominently.  There is also extensive mention of the golf course in the book.  I went on line and saw that the course has a very nice website that mentions it was a Colt design.  Does anyone on here have the experience of playing the course, and if so what are you impressions.

Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

I'm not really registered, but I couldn't find a symbol for certifiable.

I played Bath GC nearby, also credited to Colt.  It was recommended to me as the best in the area.  It is a pleasant walk, enjoyable on a mild day with light, intermittent rain, but not a course I'd be interested in playing again.  For reference, if I am in the Dornoch area, I'd fit Golspie in somehow.  Brora for sure.  Tain?  Maybe.

Lansdown has no strong merits other than its dry in the winter and easy to walk. Somebody 50 years ago decided they should plant trees each side of the fairways and they have gone with that. I first played it in the early 70s and it had great turf, walls and some moments of interest. Most holes are now very dull mainly just because of the repetitive planting. HC would want his name removed if he was still alive, the course was changed a fair bit from his design and only half the holes remain that were his work, in the 50s the club altered the quirky holes on the right of current 14 in favour of creating a new loop of holes from 7 to 12. The best moments are the 2nd where the bunkering gives hints of Mr Colt and the 14th has a sunken green with some nice contours, the 3rd has been changed, I think 5 might be new, the 6th is a good hole but not Colts as this was two holes, the bunker might be his, with nods to a reversed road hole. The 13th is Harry's and quite a fine hole, the final four holes are all Colts but the land is very flat, some good fairway bunkering breaks the monotony so you can nearly remember the holes but its one of those best played with a beer in a scramble with most greens suffering from leftunrightus.

Bath is quite nice over fairly interesting ground. Most of HC works is intact but it is only the best in the area if you define best as within one mile! There was a hole uphill/blind from the back of the current 5th that is NLE, the 6th hole has changed from HC days, 11 may be new hole.

Adrian,

I don't recall who recommended Bath to me, but I'd be curious to know which courses near there (say within 10 miles) are better.

I think that was me, but your parameters were quite tight if I recall.

Within 10 miles you have; Kingsdown, Lansdown, Knowle, Cumberwell Park (Red-Yellow), Cumberwell Park (Blue-Orange), Manor House, Players Club (Codrington) Players Club (Stranahan), Saltford. Stockwood Vale, Entry Hill, Orchardleigh. Tracy Park (Crown), Tracy Park (Cromwell). In my opinion 9 of these courses are better, though a couple suffer badly from conditioning issues.
