Biarritz Holes - A catalog 2020
« on: October 22, 2020, 12:48:37 PM »
Not to thread jack 2 other Biarritz hole threads, wanted to start this as a catalog of all existing Biarritz golf holes as of 2020. I was amazed some say they have played 50 and thought are there really that many?  I'll update this alphabetically and then itemize out par 4/5 separately.  I'll start with some I know of and consulted Andy Johnson's article on Biarritz holes, which isn't maybe around 20. What others do you know of?

I added state and designer. Any mistakes please let me know.

#11 at Forest Oaks in Greensboro, NC has a Biarritz green at the end of a Par 5. Non-traditional, but actually a blast to play. With a long iron or fairway metal in hand, the effect on the going for the green in two is similar.

Saucon Valley Old Course Hole 12, a par 4, has a Biarritz-type green. What is interesting is that the 12th hole was built as a par 3 by Herbert Strong in the 20's. Perry Maxwell worked on the course in the 1950's and converted the par 4 11th into a drop down par 3, and made the 12th int a dogleg par 4. So I'm wondering if Strong built this hole as a Biarritz par 3, and Maxwell converted it into a par 4, leaving the swale-style green?

The Twelfth is the par 5 Road Hole.  The Biarritz is the Fifteenth.  A nice subtle one I enjoyed a lot.

IMO this is a wonderful thread.  When it is completed we should create a list of all.  Then I think the next questions are:

1.  where is the present dip (in the "middle" of there green) or just short of the front edge of the green?
2.  approximately what year did the Biarritz hole open (e.g. 1926 I think for Yale)?
3.  when the course first opened (for courses where the Biarritz hole opened before say 1960), where was the dip when the course opened?

I have a very strong sense that the answer to #3 will be "just short of the front edge of the green" for almost all courses built with involvement by CBM and/or Raynor.  For example, it the men's locker room at Deal (Royal Cinque Ports), there is a photo of #9 at Yale and the inscriptions says it was taken on opening day in 1925 or 1926.  It the very very clear from that photo that  on the back part of the green behind the dip the cup pattern is a "cross-hatch" and the cup pattern short of the dip and in the dip is only "back and forth".

My guess is that the answer to my question #1 will be about 80-90% dip in the "middle" of the green...and for the old holes, it will be clear that at some point, the green front was extended well forward.

Hole 8 at Sweetens Cove is a par 4.  Hole 9 is a par 3 with one of the most extreme greens in North America.

I just checked the scorecard. Twelve is 233 par three.
Interesting. I checked another scorecard that agrees with you.
It’s been twenty years since I played there.

Jeff quite a healthy portfolio. I saw Weeks Park and was a throwback. I coached football at Midwestern State Univ there in 1997 and played there quite a bit. Sadly don't recall any holes as that was pre GCA enlightenment days where we were looking for a cheap place to golf and have fun.  Fit the bill.

Ah that makes sense.  I think they've changed the routing a couple times.  I played it last summer, so hopefully still the same as then.
