Pebble question (Beach Club)
« on: February 04, 2024, 03:40:07 AM »
I was wondering today if the Beach Club was always planned to occupy its current location between 4 and 17. Without it, there would seemingly have been potential for an entirely cliffside par 3 17th. It just got me curious about whether that spot was set aside for the Beach Club, or if there was some other reason they left that particular bit of land open from the start.

This is all it says on the web page, but it may not have always occupied the same location.

This impressive venue has a rich history spanning more than 90 years, and is just a short stroll from The Lodge at Pebble Beach. It overlooks the famous 17th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Matt,

Before it was a beach club, it was a fishing club.  On the 1924 Pebble Beach map, it’s listed as “Fishing Club”.

There is a history on the Still Water Cove fishing pier on this webpage, scroll to the bottom, it starts with History Note highlighted in red.

Thanks Bret. The history included this sentence:

Just a few years later, in 1919, the small fishing lodge had grown to be “one of the finest fishing clubs in the country.”

[/size]That’s the year Pebble Beach opened so it certainly seems like that was already established and they built around it.

If they tore it down and relocated it would you reroute the 17th or create a bye hole?

I think it might be interesting to have a tee for 17 right where the pier starts so you are hitting across the cove.

Wayne,

I took a look at Google Earth and it looks like the resort owns the area just east of the start of the pier.

I suppose they "could" put a US Open tee there, (which would be shielded by the giant hedges and wouldn't hold up play for those teeing off on 4).  As for the shot, it would be a 200 yard carry over the water and ~245 yards to the center of 17, which certainly seems plausible given how far these guys hit it today.  ;)

I was thinking that the tees would occupy the cliffside land exactly where the Beach Club currently sits.

But this would certainly be interesting, although they might need a bigger fairway on the right!  :o

Good thing Mike Davis is retired or he might try that.

They’d probably have to put a large screen on the other side of the Beach Club so spectators on 17 could see the tee and the swings.

Really disappointed no one has yet suggesting putting the new 17th tee on the end of the pier. Think of the sponsorship opportunities!!! Just in time for the new Aquaman sequel...

It is an interesting point though. I've heard that there was great regret over the sale of the property where the 5th green now sits- and the accompanying concessions that needed to be made. Circumstances seem a bit different in this case, but another hole hugging the coast on 17 would have been pretty sharp.
On another note, I've always felt that the 17th hole would be more impressive from the tee if the tee box was elevated just a little bit. Not necessarily a big push-up box, but just another 2 or 3 feet to give you a little more perspective. The current box (boxes) sit at such a low elevation that you really can't see much of anything from the tee. Bit of a waste of that location IMO.

I have a reservation at The Lodge in October and this is the first I've heard that Pebble Beach has a pool  :P
