Surprise of the trip - The Ocho
« on: October 14, 2020, 06:45:46 PM »
I took a group of 10 guys to Pinehurst in late September which included a regular on this board who has played over 1000 courses (I'll let him identify himself!)... we played #1, #2, #4 and #8.  While we enjoyed all of the courses for a variety of reasons, surprisingly almost everyone ranked #8 ahead of #4.  It certainly has a strong collection of par 5's but to me the true strength of the course is the greens.  They are certainly the best set of greens on any Fazio course I have played and are among the best I have ever played... period.

I know #8 is generally considered one of the better courses at Pinehurst but it should get more recognition nationally.

It has been about five years since I took a group to PH and it included No 8.

I agree with your assessment, GDub.

Here is how my eyes and camera saw PH No 8 in March of 2015:

Geoffrey, I played ocho again two weeks ago. Everyone I talk with says how fast the greens are and I certainly agree with that but I don't find much interest in them. Haven't played a lot of Fazio courses but if anyone is paying to play in that area, Southern Pines and Mid Pines would be my recommendation-greens and all.

The challenge on #8 is in hitting approach shots that don't leave you with very difficult and fast putts/chips. The grain and slope of the greens makes it tough to get your ball in less dramatic places on and around the greens. I would include holes 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, and 18 as those with greens that have plenty of interest. I like Southern Pines, but I wouldn't recommend it over #8. Mid Pines is great and I would put it before #8.
