Cedar Rapids CC Storm Update
« on: August 18, 2020, 08:48:33 PM »
Quick update on October 14 - Post clean up.
We ground almost 700 Stumps. Those are in addition to many trees blown out of the ground by their root buds and others still standing waiting to die.
Lots of width... not may angles left.
Ron Prichard has been working quite diligently this past month.  More news to follow.

I was at the course again yesterday Sep 2 and posted a montage here:
It was stunning...

I’ve gotten a bunch of GCA notes of support for our storm damage. Thanks. Thought I share would some accurate info.
The storm was phenomenally destructive.
The account here from a CR based journalist is insightful:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/08/14/iowa-derecho-attention-aid/

Our GM/Super, Tom Feller, has an excellent feed here. It would be far more insightful than any of my words.
https://twitter.com/crccsup?s=21

The short story is that the entire region is still paralyzed so our course damage is comparatively inconsequential but extensive. 80% of our trees are damaged. 10-20% uprooted to the Root bulb. We are determining next steps next week.

Thanks and more to follow.

Wow. I only heard a little bit about the storm on the news. It certainly is underreported. Best wishes for Iowa and Cedar Rapids. I lived in Iowa in 1948-1951 and have fond memories of the state.

Unbelievable carnage. We got hit here in Chicago but not nearly on this scale. These stories and the accompanying photos remind me of the 1967 tornado that hit Beverly.

Been thinking of the CRCC crew, as well as Iowa in general lately. I appreciate Tom's updates on Twitter. I'm disappointed, but not surprised, there isn't broader coverage of the derecho. As Thurman said, we're rooting for you all here from SW Ohio.

Vaughn - thanks for the update...had been wondering how CRCC had fared through the storm.  Hope everyone up there stayed safe and things can start working their way back to some sort of normal in the near future.  Take care up there.

Thanks all.
We had a pretty sobering call this evening.
It is clear this is not a quick fix by any means.

Planning meetings to commence soon. Will share more news as prudent.

Vaughn,

I hate to see that the club has to deal with this.  The course and turf were really humming (almost as much as the post round beers) a just a few weeks ago!

Please keep us updated.

Thanks

So sorry to hear about this Vaughn.

I've spoken with some old friends and acquaintances from Dubuque and the city was largely spared from the massive destruction faced by other neighboring cities, including yours.

Thoughts go out to you and the staff at CRCC, hoping that you all remain strong and persevere throughout this long recovery.

Best of luck going forward.  I know the power of that storm even in Chicago - I lost three trees.  Ours was a more localized damage - if the entire city was hit we still would be clearing the streets.

Vaughn, I'm sad to see the destruction the storm has wrought upon your beautiful course. A friend of mine who is a member at Elmcrest had posted about the damage there, and she said CRCC was hit even worse. Judging by the photos Tom Feller posted I can see that's true. Hopefully there will be some silver linings found amongst the clouds you see today.

Fortunately we only saw 80-90 mph winds here in Iowa City so the destruction was much more limited. Our big hit came from the 1998 derecho, which dropped a lot of beautiful trees on campus as well as the courses around town, so I can sympathize.

Keep us posted with the plans and perhaps some before/after photos once the cleanup is done. Good luck to you and all the membership through these trying times!

Definitely took quite the hit!  :-[

Hopefully the remaining trees will regain their leaves next spring and it won't look quite so sparse. That's almost the worst thing about the damage in the Cedar Rapids area, it looks like November came early since so few leaves are remaining on the trees that are still standing.

I don't mean to be flippant or insensitive, but would the course benefit with fewer trees like other places...Oakmont being perhaps the most noticeable improvement.

CRCC already did a major tree removal program. Picking and choosing what trees to remove will always be a far superior outcome to letting storms choose randomly.
