Lynn,

Thanks!  You'll have to come back for a return visit during construction and/or after.  I need to borrow your buttery swing rhythm again and the process/outcome should be fascinating to us architectural aficionados.

Mike S.,

It takes a GCA village., indeed.

Thanks...it is amazing how many folks provided support and ideas throughout this sojourn and I'll look forward to playing the restored course with you and your local in-law someday in the not-too-distant future.

Last evening a fundraiser was hosted at Overbrook Country Club by the Cobb's Creek Restoration and Community Foundation, with over 200 invitees attending.  Jim Wagner of Hanse Design was able to attend, as well.  The foundation announced the launch of a new website.  Check it out.

I checked out the website. I guess it's smart that you mention the environmental benefits first. That golf seems secondary reflects the reality of our times.

I think it’s a terrific website, Mike, content wise and aesthetically both. Congratulations. It befits Cobb’s Creek well — its history and its future. You managed to combine a stylish elegance with a warm homeliness, a high brow elan with a populist touch. I was gonna say it reminds me of *you*, but actually it reminds me more of President Obama!
Very nicely done indeed.

So, meaning no offense but to cut to the chase, when does construction begin? $20M seems like an extraordinary goal and worthy of masterpiece obsessions.  Given decades of pro bono efforts by many, a few paybacks seems entirely appropriate, but without land costs, wouldn't that budget build the very best?  Even considering some endowment funding to ensure future sustainability supporting your goals of accessibility for a diverse community, that's a lot of dough to spend on a renovation.  Please understand that I'm totally in support of your project and hope that you create a lasting legacy to the Philly school of golf design, and also enthusiastically congratulate all for getting this far, but really, this is just a public golf course, hopefully an affordable urban golf course going forward, but is this project really worthy of so much investment as a work-of-art monument to the art of golf course architecture?  Just because folks did such things at Torrey, Harding, and, dare I say, Augusta does not excuse them from accountability for why this is something we should celebrate.  Just curious about what folks think.

Hi Dave,

Just for perspective, that number includes the complete rebuilding of infrastructure ( there has been no capital investment since the 1950s) and grassing of two golf courses across nearly 400 acres, rebuilding of the clubhouse that burned to the ground a few years back, renovation of the maintenance facility, creation of a learning center and associated golf facilities for juniors, creation of 40 acres of wetlands, and a complete flood control and creek restoration along and within the entire property.  The flood mitigation piece alone is estimated at over five million dollars.

A better question might be how are you guys doing this for only 20 million dollars?

Economic studies looking at the potential payback to the city and region as well as the soft benefits of realizing human potential are significantly positive.

Mike,

I apologize.  I woke up in the middle of the night with an infection, was a little bit grumpy, and should have kept my pie hole shut.  If I ever heard of a project more worthy with more integrity, I don't remember what it was.  I hope it turns out as great as you guys think it will.

Dave,

No worries at all and no need to apologize.  It's a huge project using public lands so it invites scrutiny, much of which we anticipated in a sincere attempt to be responsible stewards of the land and altruistic community benefactors.

I hope you're feeling better soon.  Give me a shout anytime you're in the neighborhood.

Mike, what are the plans to move the homeless folks on the second hole of Karakong? I hope this is not a stumbling block to what is a very worthwhile and needed project. You and the good doc deserve a lot of credit for carrying so much water on this effort.  Great job guys.

Ed B.,

The present secluded second tee of the Karakung course will be converted to wetlands.

Joe B. and I have played Karakung plenty of times over the past few years and only once ran into what seemed to be a kegger (w an abundance of 40s) on that tee.

We played through.   ;)

Cobbs course closing for repair
The historic golf grounds will get a $20 million renovation. The target date for reopening is June 2023.
Philadelphia’s historic Cobbs Creek Golf Course will close for a few years to undergo a $20 million renovation aimed at restoring it to its former glory as one of the country’s most well-regarded public courses.

Cobbs Creek will close to the public Oct. 31, when the city’s contract with its managing company, Billy Casper Golf, ends. The renovations will start this spring, and the course is expected to reopen in June 2023, a representative from Philadelphia Parks and Recreation said.

The course had fallen into disrepair over the years. Dying trees litter the greens, and the creek that runs through the course floods often, causing erosion, damaging holes, and spreading debris after rainstorms. In 2016, the course’s clubhouse burned down and was replaced with two double-wide trailers.

The renovations, which will be funded by the nonprofit Cobbs Creek Restoration & Community Foundation, aim to replace the clubhouse, fix the floodplains, and create wetlands around the creek to prevent flooding, according to Chris Maguire, who chairs the foundation’s board of directors. The revamp will also add an educational program for young golfers.

To date, the foundation has raised $12 million of the $20 million it needs to finish the renovations. Maguire said the coronavirus has made applying for federal, state, and local grants more difficult, but the foundation is continuing its fund-raising efforts.

What are some of the reasons that this project will take 2 years? (18 months of construction and 6 months of grow in?)

I would guess, "creation of 40 acres of wetlands, and a complete flood control and creek restoration along and within the entire property. "

Scott,

I'm no construction specialist but the creek work completion is fundamental to having a sustainable golf course ongoing.   Also, the property itself is nearly 400 acres and has had two eighteen hole golf courses for most of its history so there is a significant amount of effort needed to build a cohesive whole that encompasses a restored original course, creation of wetlands, creation of a new original nine hole course, creation of extensive practice grounds and short course area for juniors.   I also believe the grow-in is targeted for 9-12 months.

Best public golf course in America right? I like anything rallying public golf. National golf links, this Cobb's Creek consortium and of course the nothing but crickets Jackson Park course in Chicago.
